I have a vinyl recording of Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” that is notorious for being hard to track. The first cannon shot makes a lot of players skip. Even with the naked eye, it’s easy to see where that happens.

I also have a few LPs that have almost an hour’s worth of sound on them. SNR isn’t exactly stellar.

I noticed that my SQ pressing of DSOTM is quite a bit lower level than the original stereo version, although I don’t believe there’s a valid technical reason for it. Most of my SQ LPs seem to be a similar level to the stereo versions.

That's gotta be the Telarc LP. I have that one, too, and the groove actually makes a 90 degree turn when that first cannon shot goes off. Shure used to claim only their cartridges could track it.

The Canadian Polydor releases "Best of Deep Purple" and "Early Purple" both sounded bad; apparently they were released after Tetragrammaton went bankrupt and were culled from vinyl rather than the master tapes!

Yes! That's the album. It's horrendous. But such great material. I was so excited about it. Until the needle dropped, lol

I recreated it on CD using the tracks from the EMI CD's! I used to play the vinyl a lot despite the lacklustre sound, as you say great material!
