We like what we like. I'll never criticize anyone for their choice of music!
I'm about 58 minutes into Parasomnia, and the current track was going good...until it wasn't.
Way it is. I just tell it the way I see it, no harm intended or implied.
Hi Mandrix
Apologies. My comment came straight after yours and so may have looked as if I was specifically responding to your post, which I wasn't, though your post made me think about it. I was more just noting that there are quite a few negative comments, more than I would have expected as the album itself is getting pretty good to great reviews in general across the internet.

The mix itself is OK, with some nice moments (especially when there are effects). And, while I'm not a huge DT fan (seen them twice, and Jordan by himself once), this album is certainly coming across as a definite grower (I'm on my third listen, and this is the most enjoyable so far).
Best cheer to you! :)

I said I like the album but the mix is pedestrian.
I do agree, like what you like and don't sweat other's opinions on what makes you happy.
I don't get your take on the mix as pedestrian, don't sure what it means, but it don't sound good.;) It's not the best Atmos mix, but to me it's quite enjoyable much of the time, and I really like the music.:) What Atmos configuration do you have?

Pedestrian as in not taking full of the entire speaker range and soundstage provided by my 7.2.4.

While I enjoyed the music I could not help but lament the missed chances to fill the room while restricting the music to mostly the fronts.
I probably should not have played this following EJ's Diamonds which occupies every speaker.

So, I've just given the Atmos a listen and personally, I really like it. I'm not a huge DT fan, though Images/Words was huge I thought. For the genre, I think the fidelity is solid, certainly not lacking in thundering bass on my system. Vocals are clear, drums rock solid and keys also clear. It rocks.

The surround mix suits me just fine. While I would agree, it may not have mucho discreet stuff super often, I still get the very distinct feeling of a wide enveloping mix that uses some of the space around where the speakers are. Portnoy's drums sound good to me and his drum rolls for sure don't feel isolated to the front speakers. Whether it's trickery with some reverb, I'm not sure. But for me, it works just fine.

I would easily give this some good rotation going forward. I like it. I didn't find a poll, at least using a search. I'd vote as follows;

Content 9
Fidelity 9
Mix 7.5

Comes out to 8.5, I'd probably round down as not to over inflate my vote. So, 8

I wonder if it's my speaker positioning and as when I have my lazyboy chair reclined my ears are right at main(the 7) floor speaker height levels and I am seated fairly close to my rear speakers of traditional 5.1 setup,I am hearing tons of stuff in my rear's as Gene as said the drum rolls are right in the rear speakers with main drumming coming from the front and there are some fantastic guitar riffs that spring up in the rears. I have the screen turned off for my whole listen as don't want anything distracting ,can't remember which song but there is a music box that is playing in back right and seems like many of the sound affects start in back right and then stuff fills out from there as band starts getting into their groove.
In one of the songs the main vocals switch to the rears and have a bit of front and then back thing going on with vocals.

Looks like my order arrives tomorrow, Sunday.
It seems reviews are all over the place.
I hope I like the music first, then I can get behind whatever surround is. But if I don't like the music, then it turns into a box on a shelf.
Dream Theater is hit and miss for me.
I did see them at The Warfield in SF when there debut album was released , packed house and mostly all guys and all drummers as Portnoy was a revolution on that album.

This!!!
100% agree

I am not impressed. Not by the mix nor the content.
Musically, to me, it sounds like your standard DT album. It has its moments, but plods along a bit in my ears.
I think it is overhyped with Portnoy's return. Truth be told, Portnoy sounds a lot like Mangini to me on this album, ironically. Nothing new here. The mix is okay, nothing special.

Yes the mix doesn't seem very adventurous. Not much through the surrounds and absolutely nothing through the centre. Definitely an opportunity missed .......

My Art Book arrived today, outer paper sleeve, scrunched, spine dented in two spots, top right corner dented.
I don't give a XXXX. If I am like Gene and sell it for $10.00 who cares anyway.
Plus @Imbobman must be all the hixie dixie wicked karma on me for calling out Sir Paul on his oldness. :ROFLMAO:

Oh and why I am at it @4-earredwonder Paul Simon, you got to be kidding, lets see how many people would go see Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell on the same bill.

Ok, now I'm being just plain mean. I will stop this nonsense now.

Back to Dream Theater, I hear it's not even that good.

So far the winners of 2025 are SDE and Rhino by a country mile.

I'm in the 'solid 8' voting block, 5.1 playback only. I could be swung to a 9 vote by time a poll actually gets started.

It's a good all around effort, I've been playing the album a lot too. Probably more than any of their last 15 years of releases. Portnoy maybe brings that 'special sauce' I enjoy? There's some of the 'same ole same' as expected on any Dream Theater album, but there's also a lot of straight forward kick ass and stronger than recent material song writing.

I agree, I think it is a very good effort from them and the Atmos is well done.
Here is a pretty good review of this album.

I'm listening again at work with my stereo shit 2" speakers, getting' more into it. I totally want to be stoned and head bang, but Jack Daniels and Atmos really makes things come alive.
Is my wife out some night this week?
I really want to get down and immersive myself with all the little creatures and nightmares.

I loaded the 5.1 DTS HD MSTR 24bit/48Khz onto thumb drive to play in the hot rod today, wow, awesome.
If you are ever lucky enough to hear surround in a car, it is an entirely different experience than in the home. The nearfield listening is really something, everything is so in your face.

A thing of beauty 😍
My brother has just bought a Mercedes GLX with full Dolby Atmos surround.
You are right, it's a whole new listening experience to hear surround music in a car.
I didn't want to leave 😁

I've often wondered,,,, If you were only worried about one listener in one spot of the room, would you be better off placing the speakers much, much closer to get the effect you speak of, or still place them farther away for a less "in your face" experience.

It's a very good question. I have seen some pictures of surround systems in very small apartments and I have read some articles.

My experience having both they are different, I think your listening space should engulf the size of room. If I had a 20' X 30' X 12'ceilings I don't think I would lay out a 5' X 5' niche in the corner. However when I was building my surround for car I did do a layout pretending equipment and wires where as if in the car.

The home 12' X 14' with 8' ceilings has a flavor for lack of a better word, that has been played and tweaked to my liking. I think it sounds bad ass. I am basically the only one that has listened to it, my biggest fear in life is a group of QQers would come over and say this sounds like shit. It is hard when you are your only feedback.

The car, I used a Crutchfield mounted Blu Ray player, USB in- sub in trunk-3 mains on dash, 2 rear deck-and two mids front doors, the key is the JBL DSP that you access from Ipad, and you can really dial it in, plus all the auto deadening stuff. I have never played an Atmos file, I just keep with 4.0's and 5.1's.
The music is exaggerated when I say in your face, like if there is a swirl going round in speakers, or an isolated voice coming from rear left, man, you really hear it,
Keep in mind it is not a small niche in house it is a vault of plastic metal and glass, where sound is mostly not escaping, the DSP on the Ipad is really important.
