Thankfully, back in 2015 RHINO RECORDS went back to the original analogue master tapes and released a slew of Van Halen's classic albums in stunning sonics. I was fortunate to buy over a half dozen of these treasures from AmazonUS for about $5~6 each and they REALY SOUND AWESOME. Remastered @ Bernie Grundman studios so you know they're GREAT!

Indeed. If anyone wants them as files, they are on HDtracks. 1984 is the best it's ever sounded -- and not compressed.

Best to get the 192/24 ...not because of the ridiculous sample rate making any difference, but because that's the one that is not compressed. The 96/24 (and I presume, the CD rate one), have reduced dynamic range, unfortunately.

I don't know if this is true of the other HDtracks VH. I suspect it is.

Damn...

VH1 was the soundtrack to my high school years. (Graduated '85)
Everyone had it.
Well... everyone but me I guess! It was always playing somewhere. I never needed to get my own copy! No one else had the weird King Crimson albums and such that I was hunting for.

What's the best copy available for these nowadays? Is there a legit HD 24 bit download now? Made from the genuine masters and free of volume war hype? Someone mentioned vinyl remasters. Kind of hoping there's a legit digital edition though so as not to break the bank.

RIP Eddie

Van Halen became my favorite band towards the end of my high school years. Probably 1991-1995 or so. Until they were overtaken by Pearl Jam. And the whole breakup with Sammy really soured me on the band for years after that. But from my earliest years of listening to music, around the 1984 era, Van Halen was there. I liked all the singles from the first two Sammy albums and by For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, I had become a big enough fan that I snagged the CD and listened to the whole album. From there, I explored backwards in time all the way back to the 1978 debut and was hooked. I loved the Sammy era the most, but I also love the Dave era too. For me, it was all about Ed and Alex and they were consistent the whole way through. Ed was my favorite guitar player until Mike McCready and he remains one of the all time greats. Hugely sad to lose him. Listening to the band now.

The HDtracks 192/24 download, probably. They are from the original masters; the 'probably' refers to the absence of compression, as I haven't gotten around to buying VH1, but as I said, for 1984, the 192/24 is the only one free of compression,; the HDtracks 96/24 and 44/16 are both loudness war'ed.

Do any of the HD Tracks releases have any bass? I always thought the bass was super weak on every VH album until For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge.

At 9 PM EST this evening I will be doing a 90 minute tribute to Eddie that you can stream online at WRTC FM – The radio station of Trinity College, Hartford, CT

In addition to playing some of my favorite LP tracks, a generous QQ'er has kindly provided me with some very sweet bootlegs that predate the release of the first album (circa 1975 - 1977). I'll be playing a bunch of cuts from those boots.
