I'm listening
At 9 PM EST this evening I will be doing a 90 minute tribute to Eddie that you can stream online at WRTC FM – The radio station of Trinity College, Hartford, CT

In addition to playing some of my favorite LP tracks, a generous QQ'er has kindly provided me with some very sweet bootlegs that predate the release of the first album (circa 1975 - 1977). I'll be playing a bunch of cuts from those boots.
Do you have the Gene Simmons.....demo session tapes of Van Halen.....they are awesome

Do any of the HD Tracks releases have any bass? I always thought the bass was super weak on every VH album until For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge.
They have an appropriate amount of bass, IMO.

The mixes of the Roth era albums are never going to have a ton of bottom-end. If the mixes had more bass, it would have overwhelmed the central focus of Van Halen - the guitar and vocals.

They did demos with two guitar tracks and bigger, thicker bass/drums - and while competent, the magic just isn’t there. Van Halen sounded more like an 80s hair band than...Van Halen. Clearly Ted Templeton and Donn Landee made conscious (and correct IMO) decisions to simplify the guitar sound and not clutter up the mixes with big bass/drums - and it defined the classic VH sound.

I read that the Japanese Warner Bros. "Forever Young" CD series Van Halen titles were much better in terms of bass. I was lucky enough to grab a CD of "OU812" from cdjapan.co.jp.....

Back to Eddie....I was holding out for that remote chance of one big final reunion tour with both Dave and Sammy. RIP Eddie

I wonder if there will be more VH reissues. I read somewhere Alex and Wolf are in charge of the catalog now.

I just stumbled on this....never heard it before. Eddie jamming with Brian May.

i used to watch the show on Saturday morning TV as a nipper, it was like a creepy Thunderbirds meets Star Trek type thing.. have the resulting record of Brian and Eddie's jamming which i didn't get into much at the time, i should give it another spin.. good times to be a teeny tot in the 80's 🤩

RIP EVH 😭🥰

Not sure but I would say the remasters HDCD western editions would have to sound similar to that as I think they use the same masters and the "Forever Young" series are reissued of that one. I bought their first albums in that format and a couple of compilations thinking the mastering could be a little different of the ones I already had.

Anyway I bought the Japanese edition of 1984 in SHM-CD (WPCR-13260 ) format because it was the first VH album I bought in tape and it means a lot to me. I would say, again, the "Forever Young" (WPCR-78024/WPCR-75059) are reissues from it. But I would have bought that Japanese edition instead the ones I had if I would have known they would reach that amazing price. Enjoy!

Here's my little collection (plus Van Halen Guitar Hero for Wii, hehe).

Mostly I just want OU812 and 5150 in a nice remaster. Those are the only two remaining for me that need it.

Honestly, I was talking about this to a friend the other day. 5150 has never sounded "right." Between the godawful drum pads Alex chose, the off sounding edge to the guitar tones and the severely quiet mastering levels, I would love to see a 5150 Redux, with new drums recorded by Alex and a full remix on the overall sound by someone good. Brendan O'Brien? He knows how to make a band rock without going overboard on low end. Present that Redux mix alongside a new mastering of the original mix in a 2 CD release and I would knock people over to get my hands on that...

Ever hear this one? Eddie Van Halen and Roger Waters collaboration called "Lost Boys Calling" from the soundtrack of an Italian movie

I'd never heard that one before. I've always loved tracks where Eddie's a guest. Here's an early one from 1978.
