It really saddens me how many people that are canceling the 3-disc version are also being upsold to the deluxe box. That really shows them.... that they can keep shafting us by holding the 5.1 mix hostage in the $100+ packages.

I swear if a significant percentage of the people that cancel buy the big box instead it will prove to them that their strategy is right and things will keep going this way.

@Group: Beware of the box set. The 5.1 mix gets worse each time I play it.

KarnEvil9 3rd Impression is unplayable and is an unmitigated disaster. Its almost like Jakko got the wrong bass track and its some fan playing bass along with the track. It is that bad.

Jersulam has different reverb on the vocals a few seconds after the original vocals. It sounds very unprofessional and not natural.

But Benny The Bouncer kicks ass on the original DVD-A!

You guys might be better off passing on this whole mess until Sony fixes the 5.1 mix. Trust me(or don't trust me, I don't care), this mix will go down in history as one of the most controversial and least desired. I gave it an eight in my vote because I, like most of here, bend over backwards to support multi-channel. BUT, the more I play the 5.1 mix the more I want to blow up small countries in anger. Now, I give it a 6. Maybe that is being too kind.

I highly doubt you will feel happy with the 5.1 mix after paying the high price of the box.

I guess every 5.1 mix can not be a Steven Wilson special.:(

It is a real possibility the 5.1 mix was withdrawn from all the other versions because it was auditioned by insiders and they concluded it was better leaving it out. I am not joking about this.

If I didn't own the first BSS DVD-A 5.1 remix, I would be near suicidal at this moment.

FWIW, there seem to be at least two, maybe three , 2 channel mixes of Jerusalem in circulation over the years since the LP first came out, varying in the amount of reverb, and maybe some vocal phrasing is different too (it certainly is on the old DV0-A 5.1)

Btw, suicidal? Really?

Politely cancelled my Merchnow order for the 3-disc set.
F*ck the upgrade. Whoever priced these sets is a moron.
$30 MSRP for a BD or DVD-A would have been fine.
I mean it's not like it hasn't been done before.
Look at the KC, Yes etc. releases or just a goddamm SACD.
Perhaps this kind of thick as a brickness is what drove Steven Wilson away from further ELP projects.
Anyway, I have other hi-res\surround releases to look forward to.
ELP & Co. screwed the pooch on this one Big Time.

After reading this, I'm almost happy not to be getting this newer 5.1 disc...and there are and will be other surround releases that will be more affordable and likely better.

I cancelled my order too, and complained to any and everyone who would possibly listen.

I realize people say "oh well, it wasn't ELP or Razor & Tie's fault" but this neglects a fundamental issue with customer service. No one cares who is at fault, it's irrelevant. What the customer wants to know is what the seller will do to make things right.

So far, the answer is nothing.

The fact that money was taken in advance for a product that was never delivered is going to leave a sour taste in a lot of mouths, regardless of who is "at fault".

Notice how much more smoothly the XTC and Yes releases have gone. On time, reasonable price, great product. Those releases will continue to get my dollars. Razor & Tie and ELP, they'll be lucky if I even care.

I also cancelled my Merchnow for the 3 disc set. There is no excuse for the "official seller" having the wrong information about their product. Someone should own up to this.
I also agree it is against our interests to lemming like jump on the overpriced big box set. Luckily I have the original DVDA so I am content.
The new remixer should be embarrassed by the errors in the new 5.1 mix I am reading about. Is there no quality control or pride in your work product anymore?

This leaves us with only two people whose 5.1 work we can trust.......

I might go with the 3 disc version for now and maybe get the super deluxe version if and when the problems with the new 5.1 mix are fixed.

I find it interesting that they actually made two separate dvd-audio disks. One with the surround and the other with the surround removed. They went through some extra effort doing that.

Exactly! I made that point on the official FB page stating that it smacks of arrogant thievery from people we have fed very well for years. This seems like an initial salvo from these greedy bastards to say cop this you poor fools. No one has to wonder what betrayal feels like anymore. Extraordinary arrogance!

I'll need more than a couple of negative reviews of the 5.1 mix, especially after all that's gone down of late, to keep me from selling my unopened box upon arrival in a couple of days.

Despite Dennis Moore's review (which i don't agree with at all) I say the 5.1 mix is a keeper. Luckily I was one of the testers of the DVDA 5.1 disc so I have a copy. And even having a test copy, I was going to buy the set with the 5.1 mix but NOT the deluxe box. I will never play the vinyl and I couldn't care less about the book and all the extra crap. My disc contains the 5.1 mix, a 2014 stereo mix and the original stereo mix. That's more than enough for me. But another sale opportunity missed by R&T. If it's not their fault I feel sorry for them to be in this position. If it is the greed of the record company - shame on them. And that whole Pink Floyd "Division Bell" debacle... don't even get me started.

Please Bob, share your thoughts with us regarding the Division Bell 20th Anniversary release. Which versions did you order?

I have not, and will not, order any box set of TDB. They will only get my money if it is released as a standalone 5.1 disc. I'm really tired of spending my cash on crap that I will never use or listen to.

So you honestly didn't hear a problem with the bass being way too loud on the 5.1 mix of "Karn Evil 9 3rd Impression"?
Everyone else (like me) seems to think it's a huge mistake as it's not that loud on the new stereo mix...

It was easy for me to cancel the deluxe-set, because I like the old 5.1 mix very much.
So why in need of every version?

Yes...the greed of record companies had shown, that the sales were coming down for years.
And I think they will never learn, because when the sales of deluxe-sets are also going down......they will not release any 5.1 mixes anymore.
We can be really thankful to have Steven Wilson. He knows what the consumers want and can pay for a release.
I'm really happy to have the Genesis boxes (the perfect release with a fair price calculation) and the Talking Heads release Brick. They understood and released the discs seperately.

But for 2 years the companies release their super-deluxe-sh*t!
I have some of them, but I will sell some also in the future......

my 3 cents ;)

I am gutted that there seems not to be a 5.1 mix included in the 3 disc set. I have yet to cancel my amazon.com order because their website still shows the DVD to contain a 5.1 mix.

I have sent them an email asking to confirm what the DVD actually contains. They have yet to reply.

This even marks a very low point (if true) in recorded music in my opinion.

Agreed, but I would use the word disgusted rather than gutted. If it really is the case that they produced and authored the 3 disc set to include 5.1, but then pulled it, delayed it and changed it for greed reasons, then that is despicable, especially after taking everyone's pre-orders for it.

I have e-mailed Amazon UK too and await their reply, before my inevitable cancellation.

I'm not sure if this has already been posted here, but someone on the SH forum says that they received this reply, which is hilarious if true:

"We wish to avoid any confusion regarding the upcoming reissue of Emerson Lake and Palmer's "Brain Salad Surgery". The DVD that is included with the deluxe (2CD + DVD) package does not incorporate the new 5.1 surround mix of the album. That version of the album is only available with the Super Deluxe configuration. The deluxe version includes a DVD that presents a unique upmix of the original album in 20 bit high resolution stereo, lyrical information, a video presenting a special "unboxing" of the Super Deluxe version, a high resolution 920x920 scan of the original album artwork suitable for a screen saver, outtakes from the photo sessions for classic albums The Hot Seat and Love Beach, and information from the EPK that is otherwise only available to select insiders for this reissue. We apologize for any confusion, but are confident that the many extras available on the DVD are more than a suitable replacement."

Have cancelled order with Amazon.........have SACD set from a few years back-most of the extras this time seem to be the same as then, also have DVD-A so not really interested in a new stereo mix which is not even on CD but DVD!

I have played it many times and i honestly didn't notice anything.

I'll try to find some time in the afternoon to play my Dvd-a in 5.1. Yesterday I listened to the MLP stereo layer and the bass sounds OK.
For those complaining: is the issue in karn evil pt 3 also present in DTS?

My problem is that I don't have either of the old SACD or DVD-A versions (I came into the surround world too late for these) and so I don't have a 5.1 version of one of my favourite albums. With this current debacle I don't feel inclined to throw money at these tossers to get the super deluxe boxset with the new 5.1!
