Hey guys, it's great to see so many titles here, but it would be cool to have some explanations or descriptions along with them. Why do you love these albums? What did they do for you, what did they mean at any particular point in your life? How are they unique, what style is the music? I love discovering new music, but I won't go through all the albums listed in this thread - I'll certainly try out e.g. Dr. Simple's suggestion though because he wrote a little blurb alongside it.

Are you a fan of "Alternative Prog Folk"?? Then in relation to The Decemberists - The Hazards of Love you can have a read of this "Interpretation" of the album...

Its a modern "concept" album - one of my faves....

nice idea :)

i'd say most of my favourite albums/artists are pretty mainstream/self-explanatory and if there's 1 or 2 (at most I reckon) that you don't know you can always check out previews on iTunes (so handy to use the iTunes Store for that -- and then buy the real thing on CD/SACD/DVD-A..! HA!)..

..so don't think it's necessary to have backstories from me..

but Linda could give us all a history lesson with a run through of what her choices mean to her..!! hehe!! :D

Thanks for the noodge, Elroy! You deserve credit for this idea, too. Actually, this list is a very narrow representation of what's in my collection. There are hundreds of classical albums and 20's/30's blues which aren't represented. There are thousands of jazz albums, which are barely represented. And then there's Harry Partch and Wild Man Fischer...

Would you believe that I owned 29 of my 50 when I was in high school, albeit not those pressings?

Linda, thanks for starting this. I marvel at the variety in your list so far (as well as everyone else's!). Some of these I haven't heard and will have to check out, some I haven't listened to in awhile and I appreciate the reminder, and it's always nice to see my favorites on other people's lists.

that Doobies TiTTs SACD is so lifeless compared to every other mastering I've heard :(

Every LP I had of it was noisy. The SACD sounds better to me than the Warner CD, although many of the MoFi SACD's don't sound that great, like the Band.

Bubbling under my list is Milestones - Miles Davis. MoFi claims it's SACD is the BEST master of this album. Although the MoFi sounds good, I prefer the Japan Sony SACD.

it wouldn't surprise me in the least if the Sony Japan were better than the MFSL.

I'll do another A-B of the TiTTS CD (the Japanese mini-LP is closest to hand) vs the SACD now I've got the Cambridge Audio, which handles SACD better than my old Pioneer (there's noticeably more detail and bass & treble extension with the CA) ... just to give the MoFo's TiTTS a fair crack..! arooga!

oh another one to add to my Fave's List..!
(I've got a feeling this thread will run and run..!!)

In The Eye Of The Storm - Roger Hodgson
(CD A&M 395 004 2).

the first CD pressing is very nice indeed.. and the album.. well, just Wow!
Rog never improved on his solo debut, imho

oops! (one more for my baby)

and one more for the list..!

Strange Brew - The Very Best of Cream
(811 639-2)

Another West German Polydor kicks A$$ in the sound department! Crankably awesome!

has anybody worked out what the LP is on Lester the Nightfly's desk?

he's got plenty of Java and Chesterfield King's by the looks of it.. but I'd love to know what he's playing on his TT..!

I'll give you the background to my top ten

10 PFM Cook I discovered PFM on the BBC, that great british show The Old Gray Whistle test, they were playing songs from their Chocolate kings album and did a track called celebration, which I loved the same week I bought Cook, I love the energy and spontinaity on this album, the album has been re released and with extra tracks, I bought this in 1976 and still play it regular today,

9.RickWakeman Journey To The Center of the Earth, A big fan of Yes and a big fan of Wakeman, bought Henry the year it came out, an album that takes you on A fantastic journey, I plan to vist Iceland soon a find that volcano, some dazziling keyboads the solo's on the battle and final section are jawdropping, saw him live in 1977 with his band, great story's inbetween numbers was 16 at the time, great muzo and his best work.

8.Heavy Horses Jethro Tull, the best Tull album out there, I dont like anything they did after the 1980's, everytrack is a jem with green issues forwaded then, the tiltle track is the best work tull ever did, I bought this the year of its release 78 I think, never saw them live, but this was a golden period.

7.Rush 2112 Their best work, I love prog but I love heavy Rock as well, this album was a combination of the 2, Hemisphers was the first album I bought, then this, the opus 2112 is just stunning, no wonder it was a make or break album, used to play this to my mates all were impressed and all went out to buy it.

6.Hybris Anglagard. Think I've spelt the bands name right, Disscovered this band last year although the album been out many years, mostly an instrumental band this symphonic Prog feast is just glorious, you would never tire of it, I love this band and hope they tour GB soon.

5. Emerson lake Palmer Trilogy Bought this about three years on from its release date , Pictures was first then this, fantastic keyboards, lovely vocal and drums on speed, ELP were about making dramatic music this is no exception, did finally get to see them at the royal albert hall 92, but their music was so energetic back in the 70's, I'm afraid that was lacking.

4. Houses Of The Holy Led Zeppelin These giants of rock had to be in there, this album I heared in 73, and fell in love with No Quarter that track is mesmeric, and the rest of the album is top notch each and every track, so a big thank you to my sister who brought that album home.

3.Porcupine Tree Deadwing The best album from them so far, just a timless album my first DVDA so I was blown away, Lazurus is just a lovely track and the rest just superb.

2. Close To The Edge Yes. Three tracks of masterly preformance, Yes on top form wonderfull playing and an album to keep me happy on a desert Island, great artwork, thanks Mr Dean, inspired a certain film director too.

1,Camel The Snow Goose Just caputured the adaptation of a shortstory perfectly, takes your mind on a fantasy journey, bought the album on release saw this band the year after, my first concert, great memories, spellbinding concept album.
