A bizarre, thrilling over the top CAMP Horror CLASSIC overlooked for years now recently released by Kino Lorber from a 2K scan of the original camera negative. Susan Tyrrell always a superb character actor gives Leatherface a run for his money.

Love those Kino Lorber sales ..... some very fascinating titles of overlooked gems .... most superbly replicated on BD~V and NOW UHD4K!

According to the doc which accompanies the BD~V of the flick, McNichol, now 60, is still involved in making movies and film production and lives in Colorado. He is also the brother of actress Kristy McNichol.

I went to see The Northman at the cinema the other night. No time to say much about it but spoiler alert: it's not gonna win any awards!

Holy Haggis, Derek. WHILE KINO LORBER WAS HAVING ITS SPECTACULAR SALE, FOR THE PRICE OF A THEATER TICKET YOU COULD'VE REVELED IN DIRECTOR RICHARD FLEISCHER'S HOLLYWOOD TECHNICOLOR CINEMASCOPE EXTRAVAGANZA

I could have gone one better than that as it turns out the RNSO was playing Shostakovich's fifth symphony and his second piano concerto here in Glasgow that night. I didn't know until the morning of the concert/cinema and as my GF had already booked tickets for us to go to the cinema, well off to the cinema we went. If I'd only have found out a couple of days earlier we would have gone hear some Shostakovich. Oh well :)

A midnight movie cult classic. Watched this a hundred times in my teenage years. Notable (to me) for an alternate version of "Mob Rules" by Black Sabbath. I too have the double vinyl soundtrack album.

As for the audio, for what it is worth, here is the write-up at blu-ray.com - I don't know about you, but it makes we want to get this:

Heavy Metal 4K Blu-ray, Audio Quality
5.0 of 5

Heavy Metal (1981)

Sony touts the newly minted Dolby Atmos soundtrack as "a brand-new immersive experience utilizing enhanced sound effects and much more, supervised by producer Ivan Reitman." Purists may scoff, but they shouldn't. This is a wonderful listening experience. Bass is everywhere, offering extreme low-end engagement to a number of audio cues: the Loc-Nar rumbling about, heavy footfalls reverberating through the stage, the spherical alien spacecraft crashing and clanking upon impact, a volcanic eruption, and the B-52s lumbering through the skies are all amongst the low end highlights at work. The track offers full stage engagement, which includes a healthy supportive top end component. Discrete effects are not plentiful, but the sense of larger fill (along with the added surround-back channels) helps to deliver a spectacularly immersive experience that absolutely brings new life to this 40-year-old audio presentation. Music, from the eclectic assortment of top talent that contributed to the soundtrack, plays with exceptional clarity and effortless spacing. The front end dominates but the surrounds carry a healthy barrage of guitar riffs and other instrumentals. Lyrics tend to stay up front, but not exclusively to the center. The same goes for dialogue; it's largely presented from a natural front-center position but there are examples of both discrete placement and large-area reverberation. This is a first-rate soundtrack that is the perfect compliment to the visual experience.
To bring this full circle, after seeing this new edition of Heavy Metal was available, I ordered it from Amazon on Friday, had it in my hands on Saturday, and watched nice and loud Saturday night. Let me say, if you are a fan of this movie, this is the version to get. Picture restoration is first-rate, the new Atmos soundtrack is fantastic. All the sound effects are updated and modernized, with plenty of fly-overs overhead and deep bass. The songs rock of course, but just don’t expect discrete Atmos versions of the music. Highly recommended.

StudioCanal, BBC Films and Cohen Media Group present THE AWAKENING starring Rebecca Hall, Dominic West and Imelda Staunton in a post World War One horror tale set in the English countryside circa 1921 at a boy's boarding school.

It is advisable before viewing this eerie set piece to watch the bonus features, most especially A Time for Ghosts which explains that subsequent to the Great War none of the human remains of the soldiers were returned to England in which countless thousands died leaving a gap of closure in the lives of grieving families who sought solace in seances and other questionable means of contacting their loved ones. Not to mention the PTSD insufferably experienced by returning veterans which at the time was never acknowledged.

Picture and DTS~HD MA 5.1 sound are excellent with desaturated colors throughout. A thought provoking film which depicts a tragic time in Brtitish History when making sense of post WWI stress and the accompanying bird flu epidemic of 1918-1920 further annihilated the morale of a country in crisis!

My brother warned me not to waste my time on it. He and his daughter walked out towards the end and couldn't believe the positive reviews it's getting.

Ironically, it's been hailed as a MASTERPIECE! And the Native UHD4K disc will be released on June 7th. Head scratching what constitutes a masterpiece in today's day and age!!!!!!

It's so odd, most of the reviews on IMDb are glowing but there are quite a few scathing ones as well. It's hard to know where to get good information these days.
Funniest review headline: Avoid - I'd rather have covid than watch this again

LOL! Wonder if they still 'lure' the critics with expensive gift bags, private screenings and 'Meet the Stars' hoopla? That usually guaranteed favorable reviews in the past and with motion pictures costing $150M and above, a small price to pay for glowing reviews.

Started to watch the highly favorably reviewed THE BATMAN on HBO the other night and the image was so dark on my LG OLED TV it was hard to make out what was actually going on. At 3 hours in length, I'll have to at some point finish it. Hey, I'm all for 'natural' lighting but maybe I need a good joint to finish wading through this Gotham 'masterpiece!'

Maybe Criterion worked on the black levels?! Their black levels on the Matewan BD were so dark, they obscure tons of detail. I had to adjust my TV settings (something that I've never done to this extent for any other film) to reveal what was hiding. Very strange!

I am having a hard time even wanting to embrace another Batman franchise. I suppose I will check it out on HBO eventually. Can't they let it rest for a decade? Is the Affleck "Justice League" Batman still in play?

Received this email today from Barnes & Nobles. Whatever happened to their 50% off Criterion Sale?

30% Off* Criterion Collection 4K UHD | SHOP NOW
I guess we will find out later in the year.
Since this is 4k only I suspect it is more of an attempt to let regular peeps know Criterion is now doing 4k and not a replacement for the sale we all know and love.

3D on my older Panny Plasma TV was so dark as to be unwatchable. But on the LG OLED TV, it's a revelation ... almost rivaling 4K. As stated, I do appreciate natural lighting but obscuring the image with overemphasized 'inky' black levels is ridiculous. Sorry to hear Criterion's MATEWAN was a victim as I've always admired this John Sayle's classic. Do you know if Matewan was either 'director approved' or given the green light by Matewan's cinematographer?

edit: For what it's worth, here is blu.ray.com's review of MATEWAN

AmazonUS' current prices on all Criterion UHD4K discs has been 30% off consistently so I don't even consider B&N's prices a SALE!
