Yeah, I wonder how this went from being a Steven Wilson remix to a Dan Bornemark remix. That personally worries me. Maybe Dan has learned a few things in recent years, but if I'm remembering what I read correctly, Dan provided the band a remix of The Missing Piece years back that was rejected for release. Luckily we got an excellent remix by SW instead.

If SW was involved, I'm sure he would be listed in the promo material, so there must have been a separation here, and that would be unfortunate. I'll still buy it, but I hope this ends up being a decent mix.

I'm sure that GG's Derek Shulman will do an interview to explain why Dan Bornemark [instead of Steven Wilson] did the remix for the upcoming deluxe edition of Playing The Fool.

Dan Bornemark just confirmed that SW was NOT involved in this release, so title has been appropriately changed
That is so not good. I won't be buying this until I have read reviews. There have simply been too many times that I have been let down by ridiculously conservative live mixes. Based on stats, the odds are this will be too. :(

I'm thinking it must be decent because Wilson set the standard and the Shulman's wouldn't put out anything less.
And of course that's what I hope for too. Still, the other side of the coin is, perhaps they (the band or whoever the key influencers are) wanted more of a 'live feel' etc etc... which is not Wilson's bag. Whatever the case, I'm not dissing this, just approaching with caution as I've been let down more often than not and have resolved to never buy another live surround mix unless I really know the engineer's approach/have heard good reports on QQ.

Another thing to consider; SW did 5.1 mixes for all of King Crimson's albums from 1969 thru 1974 except for their Live albums Earthbound & USA. Seems that Wilson doesn't do remixes for Live albums in surround/atmos.

For me, surround remixes of older live shows are primarily desirable to better recreate venue ambiance (as opposed to a discrete directional mix) and to provide a cleaner, better sounding experience via modern technology and mixing choices. Mixes that attempt to put you onstage in the center of the band, or place instruments/vocals in the rear or overhead that never occurred during the original performance usually come across as gimmicky and unconvincing, IMHO. I want to hear (and hopefully see) what the show would have been like if I had been sitting in the audience. For those reasons I don't think a surround mix engineer of Steven Wilson's caliber is required to be successful.

There was no 5.1 surround mix for KC USA at Fripp's request. Earthbound was issued from a soundboard cassette so no multitracks to work with.

Actually, his Jethro Tull - A concert (live in Los Angeles Nov 1980) surround mix is terrific. There was also his 5.1 mix of 'Excerpts from Octopus' (as issued on Playing the Foole originally), the bonus track on Octopus blu ray disc. Plus a few Porcupine Tree live releases with great 5.1 mixes, joined more recently by Closure / Continuation Live in Amsterdam also with an Atmos mix.
