That was almost a year ago. Today I took this for a spin and was very pleased with what I heard. So what changed? Well I got a totally new amplification section for my 5.1 system last June. And I applied a significant amount of wall treatment last fall. So yeah, it's not always the disk, is it.

Nice post! I have had the sacd of GBYBR for years and years and although I dig the mix, the sound just seemed a bit off in the mid bass. Got a chance to listen to the bluray over the last week and I don't have the same problem. The bluray is a 10, easy now, for whatever reason. Thanks again for posting...

My favorite EJ album, and my favorite kind of mix... Ultra-discrete! Sound quality is great (maybe slightly compressed?) This is so good I bought the rest of the EJ surround mixes as well. I give the SACD a 9 (there are a few skippable songs IMHO). I like the acoustic version of "Candle in the Wind" even better than the original, so I won't be buying the BDA version, which only has the original album tracks.

I have the blu-ray only (not the SACD, etc). The beginning of Funeral for a Friend is great, rich, clean.

Then the entire album goes very bright, almost too digitally sounding, like a cd vs analog.

I like the discrete mix but it's a little fatiquing for me to listen to this entire blu-ray.

at least the mid-range is brought out when cranked up, but forget about listening to this blu-ray at low volume, it's like two different albums at low volume vs high volume.

That pretty much describes the SACD too, they must have used the same mastering

This poll is a little hard for me to understand, I have the 5 MCH SACD's that I love. They have the Island Rocket logo and catalog # starting in B000. I don't own the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Any suggestions as to what the # 1 version is and did the 5 disc that I have ever include Goodbye ?

There are several versions of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road in Surround.

1.) Double SACD Deluxe Edition = https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0000E64TR

2.) DVD Audio = https://www.amazon.com/Goodbye-Yellow-Brick-Road-Elton/dp/B0001Z53MY

3.) Blu-ray Audio = https://www.amazon.com/Goodbye-Yellow-Brick-Blu-ray-Audio/dp/B00I48RA76

The cheapest easiest way to get it is the most common option; 2 X Hybrid MCh SACD Deluxe Edition.

There are other configurations of the MCh SACD set
(including this one with 3rd disc, a DVD-Video with abridged making of documentary)..

4.) 2 MCh SACD + DVD-V = https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0000E64TQ

The DVD-A includes the making of DVD-V on a separate disc, while the Blu-ray (in keeping with Universal's "High Fidelity Pure Audio" ethos) has no video content and no bonus tracks.

I knew you where the one. I purchased choice #1. $29.00 out the door, I think I will be happy.

Frédérique Azül! Hope you're well man. :)

I have the blu-ray and think the fidelity and surround mix are pretty great, but it seems a bit compressed overall. Do you have a preference for which format has the best sound, or are they exactly the same?

Fab! :upthumb I'm sure you'll love it!
surroundwise it's amazing, musically it's a classic, soundwise a bit bright but it was always like that on my old DJM LPs.. enjoy! :D

hey hey, all good thx and you? (y)
some say they all sound the same.. I'm not convinced.. the BD-A has some differences (most glaring being the lack of fade up in the intro to "Social Disease".. the song just goes straight in at full volume on the BD, unlike every other version I've heard..) but one of these days I'll compare rips of the 3 versions just for fits and giggles!
The BD lacks the bonus tracks that are on the SACDs & DVD-A, of course.. and that's a shame as the bonuses are very good and have excellent surround mixes.

The DVD/A was was one of my go to surround demo discs
If you don't like FFAF/LLB, in 5.1....................................................................
In my 2012 Acura TL/Tech/ELS, it was better than being at a live show
WOW!(y)

I own GBYBR in all three formats but I'm partial to the fantastic MLP 96/24 DVD~A 5.1 with its bonus tracks and separate DVD~V 50 minute Doc on the making of.

The DVD~A is still available NEW from Amazon third party sellers for $80 + s/h and is ironically, cheaper than the OOP BD~A [w/o the documentary].

Wow, I am using my iPad and my fingers are too fat and I accidentally touched 1 on my vote, hopefully a moderator can change to 10. I voted 10 or at least I wanted to.
My vote is based on the 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition SACD 5.1 Multichannel. Absolutely superb, super discrete, great songs, love it. I have seen Fredblue's collection and I know there are a lot of choices for this release in surround but I will stop at this SACD, love it.

I hate the Bob Ludwig mastering of the blu-ray so much that I just ordered the sacd.

It's not an easy thing to do, but fortunately I stumbled my way through it and it's all set. There are actually 2 database tables to edit. Makes me a little confused!

:yikes

The BDA is a very loud recording - replayGain lowers it with 11,5dB - among the highest numbers I have seen. The sacd lowers it about half that. The BDA gives a DR of 10 and the sacd a little over 10.

Anyways - I love the album, the sound and the surround mix - I give it a strong 9!

From that, I would guess that the mastering on the SACD and Blu-ray are the same, but the SACD's PCM-equivalent peak values will be around 6dB lower due to Scarletbook standards.
