I’m using quite a few specialist (but cheap) power boards with noise filtering and lightning protection that offer a $50k warranty on any gear connected. Whether they’d ever pay is another question. I have 3 of them on my 7.1.4 system. One for each MCH amplifier and one for my AVR, Media Player, Tv and network switch.

Happy Birthday... to.. umm.. me! 😂🎉🍾🥳😋

as part of my ongoing mid-life mental meltdown i'm joining Hugo in Wonderland and going down the Linear Tracking CD-4 rabbit hole with a Technics SL-10 (that's still got its EPS-310MC cart, looks in good shape; hollow Boron cantilever, ultra low mass, frequency range extends to 60kHz supposedly and all that old bollocks...) and an Ortofon MCA-76.

is there any point wishing me luck as i enter into the abyss..!? we both know it'll all end in tears!! 😅🤣
Happy birthday. My lovely bride is also celebrating her birthday today!

I used to physically unplug the stereo system when not using it. I built a relay box too using a clunky big Air Conditioner relay but that has escaped.
I have a dedicated fuse box (yes, fuse) that serves the power into my A/V gear. If the weather gets scary I just pull the fuses. When connected one side of the 240V incoming goes to my line level gear. The other leg goes to my 3 ADCOM 555 power amps & Audiosource amp.

The power for the line level goes to a junction box where 2, 4 plex Isobarr Tripp Lite noise/power protectors are hard wired and wall mounted. I really think the Tripp Lite units are a giant step up in protection from common protection but not crazy expensive.

The power going to the power amps has a DIY protection in it. Modeled after the Tripp Lite circuit it has caps & MOV protection at input/output and big inductors in between. How big? DIY big! 1/2" x 12" ferrite rods with tightly wrapped 12 Ga wire. I have no idea what the induction is but you can feel the buzz if you hold a screwdriver to it.

I also have lightning rods on my roof that fortunately have never seen use! I like getting new equipment but not the way @Sal1950 does it!

LOL!
I am more of a SALSA dancer..hey , I GREW UP in Puerto Rico, and if you can't dace SALSA in PR you are NOT "Boricua"!!!!

Hell, yes, I'd have loved an SL-10 but oooo, doggy, they be EX PEN SIIIIVE!!!

and since I try to be a GENTLEMAN, I will NOT ASK how much Freddie Baby spent on that..HELL, it's even in its original packing!!! YES!!!
ah you know you can ask me and still remain a Perfect Gentleman!! 😋🤗 it was £499 English smackers (with our current inflationary woes that'll probably cover the cost of a Prawn Sandwich by Christmas 👀😅🤦‍♀️ )

at this point i'm feeling fairly zen about a gadget that only makes it three-quarters of the way through an album before saying "nah, you've had your fun, i'm taking a break."!! 😎🤣

i've made more expensive mistakes for sure but not many were as pretty... bonkers as it sounds i'm almost tempted to forget about actually using it as a turntable and just look at it lovingly, its sooo dinky and cute yet weighs a relative ton!!! in the words of one of my musical heroes, Isaac Hayes, its "built like a brick shithouse and that's no lie"..!! 😂💘😍😂

Fredblue if it is getting stuck it needs a lube job. Mine does too.
ooh! now that sounds like fun! 😋

would that be lube on the worm gear or on the sled/shaft the arm runs on?

also, i was wondering how tight the little black rubber belt should be?

i had a quick peek under the hood and inside the lid earlier tonight and i dunno there was kinda darkened orange "stuff" on the worm gear i guess was some kinda grease (i just left it as is) and the belt seemed maybe a bit loose but not like banjo twangtastically bad.. after i put it back together again i noticed the exposed sled was really clean, like suspiciously so.. oh and is there supposed to be a loose black slidey bit of plastic covering the tonearm wiring?? 🧐

"...would that be lube on the worm gear or on the sled/shaft the arm runs on?" I think BOTH but keep as little as possible , I have used the Lithium lubricant as well as the SILICONE (no comment ;) )one..

"also, i was wondering how tight the little black rubber belt should be?..." as TIGHT as possible (NO COMMENT EITHER... ;) )

"...i had a quick peek under the hood and inside the lid earlier tonight and i dunno there was kinda darkened orange "stuff" on the worm gear i guess was some kinda grease (i just left it as is) and the belt seemed maybe a bit loose but not like banjo twangtastically bad.." CHANGE IT ASAP!

"...after i put it back together again i noticed the exposed sled was really clean, like suspiciously so....." LUBE IT, BABY (did I say No COMMENT?)

"oh and is there supposed to be a loose black slidey bit of plastic covering the tonearm wiring??" ...yes, as in any healthy relationship!

My contribution is that it has probably been more than 5 years since I have changed anything. I mean my last gear change was probably a new AppleTV 4K. But same speakers, AVR, TV, etc. for as long as I can remember.

...NOT FUNNY!!!

...oooo , doggy! I can see you, Monsieur Virgo, ripping ALL of your favorite LPs again... I have to admit that my "humble" SL-QL1 , the poor man's alternative to the SL-10, paired with my Ortofon OMP30 , which is a NUDE fine line stylus (NO COMMENT!) has given me such ecstasy I am speechless...especially when I discovered how the gorgeous LP counterparts of my favorite CDs sounded...and why I still wonder most folks who have a TT DO NOT have a LT one....

And THAT'S why I love my 80's Technics...she's a BRICK ..HOUSE! to quote The Commodores...

I recommend using almost any lubricant other than silicone. Even though you aren't going to repaint it nor are there any optics in it silicone should be used where it is specified. Which is not on the this turntable.

I would use a teflon based lubricant. Lithium grease if fine it just "isn't magnificent enough for ya? " as my Mrs once said to me . (The complete quote "Whatsa matter Gene? Not Magnificent enough for ya??" regarding a tape deck. I married her anyway and have not regretted it)

The belt should be tight enough to transmit the power but not so tight that it causes wear in the plastic bearings (if any) When you are greasing the slides or worm gears or whatever else you need to keep the lubricant away from the belt and pulleys. If you don't , at some point you will be giving the same advice to somebody else.

Since a nearby lightning strike took out my Marantz AV7703 pre/pro, I just purchased a new Denon AVR X4700H receiver to replace it.. It will be used in it's preamp out only configuration to drive my stack of vintage Adcom power amps. One of the best measuring surround components on the market, it sounds amazing and was a lot cheaper than another Marantz pre/pro. I need to get some new pictures up soon after I get the room put back together. What a huge chore switching out a full 5.2.4 Atmos rig. :(

I purchased the same one about two months ago. A nice unit.

I am in a woodworking forum as well and they tell anyone who uses silicon on their furniture that it is beyond repair.

in the words of The Fab Four...

"HELP!"

and in the words of Penelope Pitstop;

"HEY-ALP!!"

i haven't started playing around with the Ortofon CD-4 pre-pre-amp yet, chiefly because i haven't the foggiest how you plug the bloody thing in and connect it to the mains power! 🤯😅😂

please put me out of my "misery" 😅 and tell me what the heck this is connection is?
