Back on topic, I couldn't agree more with Mike's methods to get the holy grails of surround. Some times is a matter of patience combined with good luck. I usually scout Discogs twice a day, looking for new appearances of items in my wantlist (never wait for the automatic mails sent by the application).
In the last month I managed to get for "reasonable" prices four of my pending grails: Heathen, Sailing to Philadelphia, Strange Beautiful Music and Honky Chateau. In the particular case of Heathen I made an offer to the seller to get a bundle of items (Riding with the King and In the Flesh SACD) at a reduced price that, to my surprise, he accepted.
That's another lesson learned: even if the seller says he does not accept any offers, give it a try!

...Heathen, Sailing to Philadelphia...
...Genesis green box, SACD version...
Color me jealous! These are near the top of my list. Were these all used? (Was the Genesis box European or Japanese?) My obsessiveness makes it difficult for me to buy used items, unfortunately, and finding sealed OOP items at prices I'm willing to pay is an even bigger challenge. I did luck out recently on Shangri-La (CD/DVD-A), Songs For Survivors (DVD-A), and—most notably—Toy Matinee (DVD-A), all sealed and between $20 and $60.

All used! I negotiated the price on the green box because the Lamb discs are all a bit scuffed.
Not sure whether Japanese or not!

I get being in the mood (or not) for certain music. On my adventure to review a bunch of surround albums on YouTube, I will try not to force any apathy for or burnout toward the music.
That would be counter-productive.
It is a goal of this endeavor, however, to visit each title in my collection. The reason is, I find it a little sad that titles often get listened to once or maybe a few times, then never again.
I no longer want to be a "collector" of surround albums, other than ones that are truly magical to me. The rest, I want to enjoy one last time, then send on to a new home. I think that is best for my household and the hobby too.
I'm moving toward a model of "renting" surround albums for a time, rather than keeping most of them. We'll see how that actually pans out, but that is the intention. I think it will be fun to decide on camera whether a title stays or goes.

I find that I want to have on hand all the major surround albums from each series’ line. Like the early Sony SACD series, I don’t need every single title but the biggies I want represented. Like I just got 52nd Street which wraps up that era. It’s not one I plan to listen to much at all, but it’s a big album and a good surround mix so I need it. There’s a Toto surround mix in the series but I didn’t think they are important and the price might be a bridge too far anyway.

I sold off almost all of my DTS releases to fund some DVD-A purchases. And I ripped them to FLAC before letting them go. I figured that they are all oop and the company closed up shop, I may as well cash out like they did.

I’d like to sell off my Chicago DVD-A discs (II & V) now that I have the Quadio box, but I can’t bring myself to do it. I just adore the DVD-A format for sound quality. And those cases look unique and special. It’s a classy format and nobody has been able to rip one and burn a perfect clone on DVD-R that I know of, not one that would play all the layers truly.

I like having good examples of each format. But it does get out of hand when you are sitting on $40 - $50 discs that you do not plan to play anymore, and don’t particularly care for.

Used, of course! Sailing has got a small crease on the front cover, Satriani's some scuffs on the disc, the plastic cover of Heathen slightly bent. Minor damages that I don't care about honestly. I will take care of the discs meticulously.
I always ask for pics and use the minor defects to negotiate.
BTW, I got all the Genesis boxes in sales at my local Fnac store some years ago. Literally, they had tenths of boxes piling at the store at 50 to 70 euros per boxset. I wish I had bought a second copy of each one

Nope... The Toto SACD does not contain a surround mix. But both James Taylor SACDs from Sony do, yet I find them unessential if one is not very loaded with cash. Not on my current wish list.

There are actually two versions of the Toto IV SACD - one is stereo-only and the other is stereo/multichannel (5.1 mix by Elliot Scheiner). There may even be a third version that's hybrid rather than single-layer? The one I have is single-layer stereo/multi.

Also, there are five James Taylor 5.1 SACDs from Sony: JT, Dad Loves His Work, Hourglass, October Road, and Flag.

Thanks for correction. I thought originally there was a 5.1 mix and then saw the non-surround listed.

Anyway, it does not get consistently high ratings for music or sound, or mix. So I know it's not for me.... if I am on the fence anyway.

Now, for Taylor, I would not mind owning JT (in 5.1), a stronger than usual album from his Columbia period.

Some of those Taylor SACDs (i.e. October Road) sound a little light in the rears, something I need to correct on mine. Pretty sure @JonUrban mentioned that somewhere also.

Though it’s no Elliott Scheiner extravaganza by any means, I love, love, love Hourglass. Great music and great sound, IMHO.

It's time for more fun with crazy out of print prices!
This time it's albums I've managed to score somehow:

Thick as a Brick
Badmotorfinger
New Favorite
(The Great Cold Distance 10th Anniversary)
David Live
Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs
Spectrum
Plus mention of a few others.
Enjoy!

Another great video Mike, I totally agree about the Alison Krauss + Union Station SACD, just get the DVD video w/dts surround; I've had the SACD for years and it has very little in the rears, I probably couldn't hear much difference between the two.

I thought it might be fun to link my discogs collection.
A couple dozen albums need to be added to discogs, but this is the vast majority.
