Seems like more of a 7.1 mix than full Atmos,

This is definitely an upmix. There's distorted action in the sides/rears and next to nothing in ceilings, what is there is artifacts galore,

This is no where near the quality of a half decent upmix. Not sure how it was done but its shite! If this was released on disc we'd ALL be returning for a refund!!

No way, the kind of seperation they got in the sides & rears on this isn't possible with even the best upmixer. The synths at the beginning of "Avalon" are completely inaudible in the front channels, as are the tom rolls in "More Than This" and the backing vocals in "Dance Away". The sides & rears from Apple Music don't sound terribly distorted to me, and I'd chalk up the lack of height activity to an artistic decision in the mix.

I’ve always loved the original surround mix on the SACD and on a quick listen of the ATMOS today it sounds pretty darn good.

This has a decently immersive mix. Good use of the surrounds and occasional use of the heights.

“Step my way” is a good example.
Pushing Up Daisies has a great use of the heights for the cymbal splashes. Very cool.

Yep, "Re-Make" and "Virginia Plain" sounded much better in Steven Wilson's 5.1 mix of the debut album.
Yeah, I just compared them and they're not close, even when running the 24/96 5.1 SAMBA'd to a media box into my Lyngdorf (like the Apple Music streams). More directly hrough my exaSound S88 it's not a contest. But it's also a stream vs 24/96, etc etc.

But yes, I hope SW and Clearmountain can do their Atmos magic to this wonderful catalog someday.

Back on point, the Apple Music Roxy GH is wonderful to have, simply to support "more please". :)

I'm feeling much better about not being able to find it on Tidal.

My gosh, it's just so hard for me to get excited about all these atmos mixes as 95% of the titles, I've never heard of. I know I'm in the minority here, but I just want all the music I grew up with and love to be what they offer. But.....
Even if it’s only 5% of what is offered, I have made a nice long playlist of tracks I am digging while I explore. I can keep going back to those and there’s enough already to last a lifetime.

I don’t think you’re in the minority.

I’ll be curious to see what the next couple of years brings. Maybe I’m mistaken, but it feels like the floodgates keep opening wider and wider.

Perhaps these releases you’re not feeling the love for is, at minimum, a good omen for more stuff in your wheelhouse making the transition.

I’ve seen some things come out that I would have never bet on being released in Atmos. But I’m at a point now where I think just about anything is possible, especially with the older music, specifically 60s, 70s and a bit of 80s. (At least that’s what I look forward to most.)

I know I should be grateful but I am slightly disappointed.
Better to have at least this - I know, but this remake/remodel just misses the mark.

The mixes for the Avalon tracks are passable but the SACD 5.1 tracks are soooo much better. Dare I say the mixes are a tad too bright with all the low end stuff being somewhat subdued. The cool vibe of both the original stereo & 5.1 are just not there for me.

The selections from the first albums era sound harsh and don't hold a candle to SW's mix :(

This only re-ignites my desire to have the whole catalog released in surround but with a little more attention to detail.
