Would be interested to find out if Visconti has worked on this. Or if it's some sort of transposition of his 360 mix.

A few months ago it did cross my mind that the reason that no Hunky Dory/Ziggy anniversary releases have been announced was that they might have been working on atmos mixes after the sale to Warner in January. Get the rights, work on new mixes, announce them as part of a 50th package once they're prepared...sort of thing.

I hope this is the start of more Bowie in Atmos

it'll be Visconti's mixes, they've got a bit in the can already afaik, incl Heathen, Reality, Reality Live..

Is that not for the 360 mix though? He did lots of press for the Immersive mixes - even the most recent batches of 360s in January had a couple of photos and quotes from him. Or does it specifically mention Atmos? I imagine it's more or less the same idea...I'm just not sure Visconti has worked specifically with the Atmos format.

i'd be surprised if he wasn't somehow consulted on transposing his 360RA mixes to Atmos, he may even have been involved and overseen the process although that feels like a longer shot since i thought he was "only" setup for 360RA but maybe he is mixing in Atmos as well now.. either way, its an exciting development!! 😍😋

Space Oddity is indeed a new Visconti mix, per the Bowie Facebook page.

‘A VERY SPECIAL NEW MIX BY TONY VISCONTI OF THE DAVID BOWIE (AKA SPACE ODDITY) ALBUM INCLUDING ‘SPACE ODDITY’
FIRST DAVID BOWIE RELEASE IN DOLBY ATMOS SPATIAL AUDIO FORMAT‘

I find the inclusion of the word ‘first‘ encouraging.
This day just keeps getting better and better!

Listened to the title track in Atmos just now, and it’s a really good mix.

Hopefully Come On Over and Up! get the same treatment too... 🤠
Well hopefully Come On Over is still on it's way over... Up! has now got an Atmos mix (credited to Dustin Richardson).

Jacob Collier's music is a natural for Atmos (I hope he or someone else eventually treats us to Atmos remixes of his old YouTube videos), but he keeps holding out on us. Yesterday he dropped a single that other people (Rolling Stone, NPR) seem more excited about than I am. To me it's yet another underwhelming pop-ballad collaboration with yet another underwhelming young singer-songwriter (Lizzy McAlpine). Maybe Collier can at least teach John Mayer--who's also featured, on guitar--something about Atmos mixing.

Two other singles that had me hoping for great things and left me wanting more:

St. Vincent's cover of "Funkytown" on the soundtrack for the latest Minions movie

And "Trinity," from Snarky Puppy's forthcoming album:

niiice! 🍻 thanks for the new tracks! 🤗 there was a Snarky Puppy DVD (Family Dinner?) billed as being in 5.1 i got all excited about due to the Surround opportunities and it turned out to be a load of ambient drivel! 🤦‍♀️ (the Surround, i mean, musically was great)

If you're looking to switch up your typical listening, how about some contemporary string quartet music? (Maybe start with the Shostakovich--Track 5--rather than the Schnittke.)

And I'm very excited to check out this Apple Radio series on the roots/routes of American country music, hosted/curated by MacArthur (and musical) "genius" Rhiannon Giddens and collaborator Francesco Turrisi:

yes, i liked the general spread and feeling of spaciousness of the mix and the little cool Surround-y bits like the countdown appearing to come from the Rear Left! 🚀
Yeah sounds really nice. It's strange though because I'm pretty sure when I heard the 360RA mix played at the Heddon Street exhibition - the countdown had the numbers bouncing around from different speakers?! 🤔

Some of the middle album songs sound a lot more surround-y in Atmos compared to the 360 mix I heard... Whereas the last track was a bit more bonkers at the exhibition? They did have about a billion speakers there - 22.2 Genelec I think (they even had floor speakers!) so maybe it's just how it decodes? Very cool to have it in Atmos now to compare... Now let's have a lossless release... 🙂

Yes.

"Space Oddity" 360 mix bounces around the countdown (mainly on the rear part in my room). Also it has more active channels/speakers than the rest of tracks.
"Unwashed And Somewhat Slightly Dazed" 360 mix is a little bad for me. It looks like "all channels stereo" with just 5.1 speakers.
And all the rest of tracks 360 mixes, although sound immersive, they look like a 4.0 transcription, with only that 4 speakers active.

The Atmos mix is different... and perhaps much better for me as I can use more speakers. Specially the Wides in my 9.1.4. This Atmos mix use a lot the wides with the acoustic rhythm guitar and part of the vocals imaging.

I like a lot how the vocals is mixed in Atmos. Some front, but others front/height using mainly the fronts, wides and Top Front speakers, all for the Bowie voice. Also the central speaker contains vocals, but the whole vocals sound spread around the room, even with some echoes in the surround and back surround speakers.

In other tracks, like "Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud" Atmos, the main vocals are only in the Wides and Surround speakers, giving an imersive envelope of vocals but in a location more behind and not so frontal.
