I have an opportunity to drive a friend to a remote work location the other day. He's my age, doesn't really know much music but classic rock, and I wanted to bring a surround disc with me to play in the Acura that he would recognize but not be "played to death" but also a really good surround mix, one that really hits you over the head with obvious but not poorly done surround. What did I take?

A conversion I did some time ago of a Q8 that I copied to Q4 back in the '70s: Chicago VII. I think the fact that I made the reel copy so long ago saved the best audio quality possible, as the hardware was still sorta-new, as was the tape. I only used expensive Maxell or TDK 10.5 inch reels for storage, so the source is about as good as you can get, and it sounds it. It does not sound like an 8-track.

Anyway, even I had forgotten what a gem this is. From the opening instrumental tracks, to the false start on "Happy Man", to the ocean effect that start "Wish You Were Here". This is a quadraphonic spectacular, and it really blew my friend away - especially on the songs he knew. But what he really enjoyed were those first few instrumental tracks, where the surround mix is a showcase of how to do a 4.0 mix.

Chicago VII - a surefire '10' in discrete quad. Would make a fantastic Audio Fidelity SACD. "Hey Marshall!" :phones

Wow. I agree totally. One of my most played surround albums beside Steely Dan's and Fagen's.
It is wonderful to have it.
Great! :)

If Audio Fidelity were to do Surround SACDs of all the Chicago Quad mixes (including reissuing the CTA 4.0 mix where the Quadio now goes for an arm & a leg) they'd do good business I reckon.

I would prefer Santana QUADS.
