I can play the DTS CDs directly using Foobar or on my Oppo via my AVR (Pioneer Elite SC-87).
I cannot play the DTS CDs directly using JRiver (not in DLNA mode - but local playback on the PC)

When I use the Rip button to rip the disc to flac - I get the exact same result. Playability in Foobar and my Oppo/AVR, but not playable on JRiver.
This result is the same whether or not I use the conversion option during ripping.

When I use the other method that I described (play disc, stop playback, select all tracks in disc playlist, right-mouse>>convert) what comes out is playable on everything I have that supports multichannel flac - including JRiver.

My dts flac files from Fly Like an Eagle are 337 mb. Are yours considerably larger?

I don't normally use jriver for dts but I just tested, and the ones that I used RIP in foobar play fine.

Check a couple settings in jriver...Goto dsp studio and make sure "no change" is selected under 44,100 HZ. Also make sure no replay gain settings are enabled. Hope this helps

Badi Assad/Verde (SACD).

Great disc with some gorgeous (World) music and the mix is very nice.. but the rears are too low/fronts too high, there is stuff going on back there but sounds like it's been dialed down for some reason? Mastering muck up? Hmm.. Anybody else here encounter same thing on this one?

Edit: ..and then track 7 kicks in ("Viola meu bem") and the rears as I've increased them for everything else suddenly knock me for six! Boom! Backing vocals ahoy! The following track has louder rears too (handclaps).. and the next (maracas/shakers at full pelt) and the next track there's timbales and cello nice and full in the rear.. it's almost as if halfway through mastering the 5.1 somebody woke up at the controls and was like "whoops! Better turn those faders up!"@:

I recommend this one guys, despite its 5.1 'quirks' :)

All options in JRiver's DSP Studio are completely disabled for the "Player" zone, including "Output Format" and "Volume Leveling". Think of my JRiver install as a fresh install with only the following changes to default settings:
(1) Media network is setup with all transcoding disabled (not really relevant here, since we are discussing local playback and not network playback) and
(2) Library/Gizmo view customizations - which don't impact playback at all.

The combined size of the working flacs for all 11 tracks from Fly Like an Eagle (time = 37:20) is 517MB (542,396,573 bytes).
The combined size of the working flacs for all 11 tracks from High Lonesome Sound (time = 43:03) is 560MB (588,072,362 bytes).
The combined size of the working flacs for all 12 tracks from Every Breath You Take (time = 50:03) is 1.29GB (1,394,947,980 bytes).

The discrepancy between the size of the Police disc and the other two can be immediately explained because it is slightly longer AND it is the only one of the 3 that is 24-bit DTS rather than 20-bit DTS. (If it were 20-bit DTS, I would have expected the size to be a little over 600MB, based on ratio of file size to time for the other two discs.)

... and how do we engage the moderators to help us move this discussion to a new thread? We've managed to take posts 3158-3166 and 3168-3181 (and this post) way off-topic for the thread and perhaps we need to move this to another thread for all of this DTS-CD ripping/conversion stuff.

Last post on the subject. The only setting I had to change, when setting up a dedicated zone in jriver to play dts cds ripped to flac using foobar2000 RIP mode, was the Audio Device to WASAPI.

Maybe, this is why Snood is confused in the first place. Whatever device or software he is trying to play back his DTS files on, doesn't have the dts decoder. It should be true that you only need the DTS plug-in to play back these DTS capable files within Foobar, not to rip them.:)

Listening to now (In Surround)? Nothing audible. Just trying to help a friend. smiley_biggrin.gif

Inspired by some of the comments on the Bob Clearmountain surround mix of Bob Marley's Legend album; I'm here listening to another Clearmountain surround mix that may have not been as noticed...

Goin' Your Way live bluray by Neil Finn (Split Enz, Crowded House fame) and Paul Kelly. The surround track is in 96kHz 24bit DTS-MA HD, while the stereo is a disappointing Dolby AC3 only. As you would expect, the magnificent surround track is the go. I have listened to it a few times and every time the audio detail sucks me in.

Unfortunately for those in the US it has the wrong region code..is not compatible with most players..HERE

Wasn't aware of this, to bad it does not have a region code for North America. Is the surround track very discreet in that do you hear anything coming from rear speakers at all?

Funny I was thinking of Bob Clearmountain mixes today as well as have "Barenaked Ladies-Are Me" in the car this week and it is a pretty good mix. This is 2 albums worth of surround as well.
This one is more of a modern mastering(on back says mastered for 5.1 by Adam Ayan) so not as dynamic as SW's mixes which have flat mastering done.

It's a crime the Paul Kelly/Neil Finn bluray is not all region :/ Grab the audio off it? ;)

Listening to a sample track quickly, the rears are not particularly noticeable. Listening closely, it appears to be adding a sort of ambiance - the crowd surrounds you when cheering; you get a sort of echo effect of vocals and instruments. It's really the left/right/centre that carry it. The main vocals shine through the centre, though it's also got lead guitar and at times other things going through it.

Actually, I may be corrected on the audio track here; it might only be 48kHz 16 bit. May need to re-check. Official DR12.

Queen-The Game DVD-A...don't know why I haven't played this disc for so long...this used to be my "go to" disc when I first started in hi rez...great disc...it's a fun disc

Cool! I regret not buying that when it was in print. I think it's time for me to give "A Night at the Opera" a spin soon.
