Nick Drake's Travesty SACD.

.. that's the good stuff.. on a nice sunny evening.. watching the sun go down.. with enough beers inside you.. who cares about the lousy surround mix! :smokin

Delayed response! Yes, but the re-channeled version (swapped rears, sum centre back in L/R).

better late than never! ;)

since I now use my BDP for SACD/DVDA etc, I've now got the 6-channel phono outs wired that way round (rear L & R swapped) on my old Pioneer player just so I can hear the Isleys & O'Jays SACDs the right quad way round!

a bit goofy but I don't use the machine for anything else and as they're two of my all-time fave surround music mixes it seems sort of fitting to dedicate a player just for them! :p

if I cared more for the Gentle Giant and Ten Years After quad mixes I'd be in a lotta trouble fiddling around with phono plugs to hear those buggers properly! so it's just as well I'm not fussed!

Now that is impressive! I'd be seriously tempted to suggest that act in itself is the very definition of the extraordinary lengths quaddies will go to!

Sadly I just got in from working in Sweden and as much as I would love to crank up the O'Jays in tribute it will have to wait till tomorrow :smokin

God loves a trier! :D ..and I'm always trying to squeeze the last ounce of goodness out of these surround things, gawd knows! :yikes

John Hiatt, Bring the Family DVD audio in surround sound. Have a Little Faith in Me... Lipstick Sunset... sweet.

Change - Laura Fygi (Hybrid M/C SACD).

more "poppy" and uptempo than one might expect from her.. but that's no bad thing.. at times reflective, then laidback and at times frivolous and fun, its a nice little toe-tapper of an album.. solid if unspectacular material throughout, with a couple of tunes having more of the jazzy vibe than I was expecting, most of it is jazz-lite pop.

sound quality is just so.. sumptuous! it sounds absolutely gorgeous! this is an exceptionally good recording.

lead vocals are hard in the centre so you can isolate them if you want to, captured with almost eerie precision.. capturing every inflection.. and a touch of raggedness at times about her voice, either she'd been over-singing at a gig before the sessions, or she'd been at the ciggies!

special mention to "How Do I Win Your Heart", a rather ordinary song is elevated by her silky sensitive vocal, there's real storytelling in her voice, she's subtle but on point in the verses and powerful in the chorus, her diction is incredible here.

drums and percussion are superbly well-recorded and defined, they sound very lifelike with enough substance and snap as each song requires..

..even though there's doubled up lead vocals in the rear (which I'm not a fan of) they're mercifully at much lower level than up front.. rather strangely a kick drum pops up throughout in rear right on certain tracks..but there are still subtle discrete things happening in the rear channels.

acoustic guitars have lovely body and tone and again sound very vivid and natural.

I'm glad I finally got round to opening it! I couldn't find any rips of it anywhere and nobody ever mentions this one anywhere, so it feels like dipping into rather exciting uncharted territory (let's face it some of the more obscure things on SACD aren't great or just not worth the effort tracking them down!) for a title that came out on SACD 10 years ago and is really very obscure and hard to find.. and discovering something very pleasant indeed comes as a relief!

the surround mix is subtle but effective and sympathetic and the sound is absolutely stunning. I can see I'll be playing this a fair bit over the coming months.

Fake Surround:

Primus - Sailing the Seas of Cheese through the surround master, preparing for the reissue in may. (Already preordered CD+BD and vinyl and if its good and in DVDA I will buy that onew too, just to help to sell all the copies)

Night Sessions - Chris Botti (SACD).

Oo-er..!! compared to the very crankable/subtle Laura Fygi, It's a bit loud.. but a bit good!

Surround mix is... OUTSTANDING.

another one I've just unwrapped.. I've been waiting to get the time to properly be able to sit down with a beer, crank my system up and let rip with all these surround things I've been hoovering up the last few months.. well worth the wait, so far not a duffer in the bunch.

:woopie
