I bought the SACD and I couldn't even make it to the end of the first listen...sold it right away!

The DSOTM SACD is a different surround mix, it's the 5.1 mix from James Guthrie (which is also on the Immersion BD) and it's not very good. Vastly better is the original Alan Parsons quad mix which is also on the BD.

Or was it the DSOTM music you didn't like?

As if in a Twilight Zone episode, lose your marbles and your virility is gone.

Nice marbles!

I'm going to have to listen to these two (4.0 & 5.1) and compare. DSOTM is my least favorite PF album. So, I don't listen to it much, skipping a lot of tracks I care less of. btw, whatever happened to "The Wall" being mixed for 5.1?

James Taylor in 5.1 SACD Surround Sound

The SACD has a different mix. But it was changed, in part, because the band didn't like the original 4.0 mix by Alan Parsons. So it's good to have them both.

I do not know what the band was on, but it was BAAADDD....
Why mess with success????
The Quad mix of DSOTM is an industry standard..
The JG mix sucks big time...no creativity nor anything new, which is what should have been done if they wanted to mess with it...
I guess they just wanted to take away Alan's glory cause they are Pink f*ckin' Floyd! Well, they screwed up BIG TIME...

Would anyone "repaint" Picasso's "Guernica"?????
Nope, didn't think so...

Back in thread...

Genesis- "Calling all stations" DTS 96/24 DVD-V
This one is definitely a grower...Phil mentions it in the interviews; This is NOT an "instant gratification" disc.
Very dark and medium tempo stuff, very far away from what the "usual" Genesis fare was at the time.
Expectations will screw you every time.
Almost positove that if this had been released by another band , it would have been better received
Love Ray's voice, great character...
and , man, could that guy DRUM!!!!

EDIT- great production (duh! it's Genesis) and VERY GOOD mix...

One of my favourite Genesis Surround mixes...

A classic example of artists being poor judges of their own work (Mike Oldfield has this problem too). The Alan Parsons quad mix of DSOTM is a masterpiece, it's time they all grew up and got over what their disagreements were. Floyd did their own quad mix for Wish You Were Here and it's deeply underwhelming, it's such a shame they didn't get Alan Parsons to do it.

The liner notes on the Tubular Bells SACD say that the original 4 Channel Mix, available on the Surround Sound SACD, was intended as a "demo" for Oldfield to listen to and comment on.
The notes say Oldfield was disinterested in the Quad version and said OK to the demo as-is with no requested changes, much to the amazement of the recording engineer. So you never know what the artist reaction will be to the initial mix done by the engineer and/or producer.

I have the SACD and read that note. I think it was indeed that Mike was completely uninterested. In a recent documentary about Tubular Bells on TV in the UK Mike said he basically didn't want anything to do with Tubular Bells for about 10 years after he'd written it. Most of the programme was Mike talking about things and playing to the Tubular Bells master, or interviews with Sally Oldfield and other people he worked with. At least he seems happy and at peace with himself these days, which wasn't true for a long time. He was a bit of a tortured soul for many years.

Friedemann - Echoes Of A Shattered Sky (BluRay-Audio); a bit new agey, a bit jazzy, very listenable, good recording good surround mix (dts hd ma 96/24, pcm stereo 192/24)

I was very surprised, as I saw Dark Side Of The Moon on nr.1 at the high-rez poll when entered here the first time.
I know everything is about taste, but I think there are many other surround productions that are far better than DSOTM.

I wish to see another cover on nr. 1 :smokin

Steven Wilson - Drive Home (Blu Ray). Fine stuff, discrete mixing for the live stuff too.

Two 5.1 Channel SACD Surround Sound favorites by Masanori Sasaji & the L.A. All Stars, Conducted by Jerry Hey
