A certain member here says that SW f#&ked this one up. What say you?

On my system, it sounds ravishing, Mike. And when have we known Steve Wilson to screw up a surround mix even though we all know he wasn't an EL&P fanboy. And on my favorite format DVD~A ... what's NOT to like? Sure beats the hell out of the Stereo LP!

I Must Admit to being a bit calmer since I don't have to remix any more Emerson, Lake and Palmer

f#&ked up? can we write such things on a civil site such as this? i find that hard to believe! i . . . i . . . i have only felt love and camaraderie on this site . . . dissension? confrontation? antagonism? lfe bass in your face? no, no, no dear edison--not in this place. i just can't believe it! well, unless it's some dumb aspect fourearstornasunder motherfouler who thinks the sacd of seventh sojourn sounds better than the dts cd . . . but i digress. 🤪 methinks this release is one members should find, play, and enjoy. 😘

This from a guy who posted ARMOURED~DILDOED 🍆

IIRC, @MCDave said SW f$&ed up Tarkus in a recent Marllion thread.

EVERYONE has a right to their opinions and who are we to criticize? I used to play TARKUS on a 7 1/2 ips OPEN REEL in my college days and IMO, Steve Wilson did a fantastic SURROUND makeover, as far as I'm concerned.
I can't tell you what I did during my college daze (🍆🥒🌶🌽🥕‼), but I can tell you that this one gives me HAPPY EARZ

surely this one rates a poll! read about it

it was all a while ago now but think there was a track that shouldn't have been included (wasn't EL&P or something) and there were problems with mix balances and elements.. that kinda thing i think, there'll be info round here somewhere, probably in amongst this lot

Was it I who once wrote "Perfection is a gift of the tormented?' Ah, yes. A Perfect Surround Remaster ....... was Tarkus perfect ... probably not but to a casual EL&P fan who doesn't know every sonic inch of TARKUS, better to have it, than NOT and better to have SW remix it than a hack like Rich Chycki!

LOL. I believe the word I used was "botched", but no matter. I'm a very harsh critic. If I don't love it, it's botched :p

I have a preference for remixes that are pretty much true to the original as far as balance, EQ, etc. My philosophy toward surround remixing is that the goal should be merely to spread the music around and open it up so I can hear more clearly all the parts that are too far back in the original studio mix, but not to try mixing from scratch. I'd prefer that the engineer not "re-imagine" the album. What I really want is to hear the original mix better, not different. But of course, this doesn't generally seem to be the approach that most engineers are taking (like SW on Tarkus and the s/t).

There's a psychological component to all this too. After hearing the original mix for decades, any mix that is different from the original makes my brain say "That's wrong! It's not supposed to sound like that. They pooched it up!" I have to fight this tendency. Just gotta tell myself it's okay, it's a re-mix after all.

My 3 favorite bands of all time are ELP, Marillion and Kansas. Hence my more-than-usual disappointment on the Marillion and ELP surround mixes. I view them as missed opportunities to really make these releases shine, and I can't imagine they will ever be done again.

True, Dave but if we were to compile a list of BOTCHED SURROUND remixes with missing instruments, botched intros, instruments buried in the mix or louder than they should be we might as well stick to the original stereo mixes on VINYL ... and be ticked and popped .... to DEATH!

My take on it is that certain aspects of the original stereo mix (Emerson's keys, for instance) were intentionally compressed or pushed "into the red". Wilson's remix is more "flat" and polite, which seems like a good idea on paper - getting exactly what's on the tapes, unfutzed with - but the end result seemed anemic or lacking "punch" to some listeners. I thought the ELP self-titled album was the better of the two releases - "Take A Pebble" in surround is absolutely incredible.

You got me! I need a f(z)ix! How is the mix on Zappa Plays Zappa?
Sorry for the late response. Although the concert was filmed in HD, so far it has only been released on a 2 DVD set with 5.1 Dolby Digital (448kbps). It is pretty much a standard live mix for the most part, with very wide separation of all the different instruments in the fronts, with maybe a little wraparound of keyboards, effects, backing vocals, etc. here and there, but the fidelity is really excellent with deep and punchy bass, considering it's just DD.

The performances are absolutely astounding if you're familiar with Frank's music. I just can't believe how well they pulled off all of the material on here. There are also special guests with Napoleon Murphy Brock performing pretty much the whole show, and Steve Vai and Terry Bozzio come out for the second half of the show and just destroy it.

The show is also three and a half hours long! It can be had for less than $10 on >Amazon<. If you like Zappa, this is just one of the best things ever!
