Seems to me, Clem, you need a much needed break from all those LOSSY 5.1 DVD~Vs. Time for a trip to ISLA de RAPHAEL:

I feel very relaxed at this moment. The last 5 days have been very intense, my bed/bath remodel went into high gear, painting and tile done, very small details that just wore me out. Last Monday the Governor says we will stay in shelter through May, then the Mayor on Weds says all construction can resume tomorrow with Covid training/restrictions. The hardwood floor guy starts tomorrow so it has been balls to the wall the last 4 days, going from home to work back in forth, building my training program for tomorrow. All is perfect and good. My only fear is that if too many people to stay on Covid track and there is a spike, they will really shut things down.
I also got my final documentation for the SBA government loan today and should have the money for employees in the bank within the next 48 hours.
Nothing but good news so I thought and have a Bud and a Jack, sit relax and listen to some great San Francisco music.
DVD-A and Dual Disc. Back to Back.

would you 'lose' more transcoding PCM 96/24 to DTS 96/24 than you'd gain "up'rez'ing" PCM 44.1/16 to DSD..

🤔

I really think that would depend on one's system. I've heard fantastic DD/DTS 5.1 transcodes but without being able to compare it to the LOSSLESS source material, who knows?

Adam, you've said time and time again, when D~V releases those Columbia, etc. QUAD SACDs from the original analogue masters, they ALWAYS sound better than their Vinyl and Q8 counterparts. IMO, those early DDD PCM 16/44.1 MASTERS have more info on them but when transferred to the RBCD 'standard' are brickwall filtered.

On separate components, to my ears, I can pretty much tell LOSSY from LOSSLESS ..... but NOT so much on the receiver in my bedroom set up. That's why I say it depends on your system.

some technically invalid comparisons.

DSD was devised precisely to archive analogue tapes, which with those SACDs is what DV is doing (mercifully in Quad).

one would expect anything sourced from mastertapes to have a fighting chance of sounding better than an old LP or 8-track.

mastering is critical.

But by the same token, Adam, IMO, going LOSSY from an analogue master is defeating the purpose of providing a 'mirror' image of the source material.

SACD, BD~A and DVD~A are hardly miracles if they're sourced from inferior masters. It's akin to watching a worn print of a motion picture versus watching one sourced from the original camera negative. NO comparison, compadre!

Even those older QR Reels only gave us 1/2 to 1/4 of what was on those 15/30 ips Master Tapes but in most cases still bettered their vinyl/Q8 counterparts.

the chances of anyone distinguishing lossless 96/24 PCM from lossy 96/24 DTS in a proper listening test (blind, same material, same mastering, level matched, etc) feel ultra slim.

Ever hear of Golden EARS? I disagree. I have admitted some DD/DTS LOSSY 5.1 discs do sound GREAT but on separate components versus a receiver, that comparison diminishes exponentially. Been there DONE THAT!

I've often used the Steve Wilson Jethro Tull remasters as a comparison. As good as the LOSSY DTS 5.1 remixes sound, when you play Wilson's LOSSLESS 96/24 STEREO REMASTERS you would NOT believe the uptick in quality....unless you ACTUALLY heard it for yourself. DRAMATIC [like ME]!
