Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - The Boatman's Call

As I'm making my way through NC&tBS' catalogue, this is a bit of an oddball, thus far anyway... not a single abrasive dissonant sound to be heard, and no violent murder ballad in sight. Just slow-tempo, mostly piano-based, love and breakup songs.

The surround mix is, again, not aggressive, but appropriate for the music--with vocals in the front channels and the piano across all channels.

Now this is probably Nick Cave's & The Bad Seeds best album - although they have an extraordinary catalogue of work. I imagine that his later, intimate work, such as Push The Sky Away and Skeleton Tree, would sound similarly magnificent mixed in multichannel. These multichannel DVD-Audio discs are also available cheaply, in comparison to so many other multichannel discs - what would you recommend of these releases in multichannel, apart from this one and Murder Ballads?

Well, I think those two are the best, so far. I’ve only bought a handful of their albums so far—with a similar amount currently in the mail—so I’m not the best person to ask, but of the ones I’ve heard, above and beyond the two you mentioned, I think “Your funeral, my trial” is also a standout. Also “Tender prey.”

I don’t think however that the surround mixes are spectacular in the sense that there aren’t any instruments zooming around the room, or anything like that. They are fairly conservative—as it seems was the case with many mixes from the ‘00s. But I do think that that benefits the music; I don’t think this is the kind of stuff that would really fare well with aggressive 5.1 mixes, but I’m sure opinions may vary here.

But you’re right that these albums can be found fairly cheaply. From looking around, most of them can be found, in good condition, in the $15-$20 range. So I’m going to keep collecting them.

For those who don’t know Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds; to my mind it’s very comparable to Tom Waits in the sense that it’s very vaudevillian. It’s more violent and aggressive though, and the Bad Seeds are more musically “out there” than Tom Waits’ band. And obviously Cave’s voice isn’t nearly as gravelly as Waits’.

JS Bach - Brandenburg Concertos

I received this earlier in the mail today. it's pretty spectacular; all six Brandenburg concertos, spread over two SACDs, in glorious 5.1. I particularly like how they took a different approach with the 5.1 mix with each concerto.

Specifically:

Concerto I: orchestra in the front, ambiance in the back.

Concerto II: violin in FL, flute in FR, oboe in LR, trumpet in RR, with the orchestra surrounding you.

Concerto III: 3 violins, 3 violas, 3 violoncellos. Violins distributed across left side; violas across front; cellos across the right.

Concerto IV and V: soloists in the RF, LF, and center speakers; orchestra in the rear speakers.

Concerto VI: in viola in the front, one across the rear, the rest of the instruments in the left and right.

So, yeah, I'll definitely be getting more of this Tacet series.

 :SB I read QQ threads daily, the ones I like the best are the music based threads, they are fun. Probably my favorite thing about QQ is the people and the freindships I have made along the way.
What I love/hate about QQ are the gear threads, people can get mean over the exact subject we all like but when I weed through the mire, I can learn alot.

Listening now to The Pineapple Thief - Versions Of The Truth - excellent 5.1 BD-A from 9/4/2020. 24/96 with DR's of 13's,14's,15's.
When reading QQ do you ever feel like this track list?
Versions Of The Truth
Break It All
Demons
Driving Like Maniacs
Leave Me Be
Too Many Voices
Our Mire
Out Of Line
Stop Making Sense
The Game

Yep - any time you start asking questions about gear, you set yourself up for a wide range of responses...assumptions....ass-beating, etc. Personally, I don't understand it, but that's me. It would sort of like visiting a poor neighborhood along the border of northern Costa Rica and southern Nicaragua and poo-pooing their living conditions. Yes, I've been to that border.

But, overall, I get TONS of great responses to my gear threads. Probably due to my immense appeal on the forum.
