Too bad about the mix on that one Ralphie; love Alan's playing (it's massively other worldly) but probably with Holdsworth's synth sounds usually having that ethereal, spread out sound, it would be a nightmare to mix with a discrete sound.

I even went so far as to buy a Japanese ver. of Hard Hat Area - which is supposed to be a stealth Circle Surround title; played it thru my Marantz 8500 in CS-II Music mode and had maybe a little discrete activity in the center with drum and bass parts. Holdsworth's guitars and the keyboards (synths) are just output over all channels.
Also the metadata of that Hard Hat Area release on the Oppo was showing a totally different album than what's playing. The titles are for the album Atavachron -maybe an mastering/authoring glitch.

Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! seems to be mixed more adventurous than the others. I'd also go for Let Love In, for the track Red Right Hand alone. And then The Good Son, probably. I've got 'em all, anyway ;-)
Now bring on the rest of the catalogue in surround and Grinderman too!
Done! Thanks!

There's nothing inherently wrong with the mix, JP. It's a live unedited DSD 5.0 Recording and it sounds superb on my system .... DSD out into my all analogue Parasound P7 pre amp ........

Methinks we're spending way too much time lately nitpickin' at what should be in those surrounds. As I've mentioned, when you embrace all types of music, classical included and especially jazz ..... sometimes LESS is MORE! On full range speakers with separate components ........ even those ambient rears take on a new dimension for a room filling experience. Trust me on that!

Susannah McCorkle FROM BESSIE TO BRAZIL [Concord Jazz/Multi~CH SACD] One of those albums whose sonics are so tactile you can practically reach out and touch it ..... The Orchestrations are sensational! VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Today I got The Good Son in the mail, and yeah, it's indeed a bit more surround-y than the other albums I have by NC & tBS thus far.
I wouldn't say it's musically their greatest album, but still very good.

Pretty hilarious cover art, btw :ROFLMAO:

First Nick Cave record I actually liked, way back then. His Birthday Party and ยด80's stuff frightened me. Haven't played it for years though - buying the surround mixes is a great excuse to go back and revisit old friends.
