Every once in awhile I forget how good the Dutton Vocalion surround 4.0 discs are. SACD 4.0, DSD64, DR's are 12's, 13's and 14's.

Donny Hathaway, Extension of a Man (1973). Lucky to have a good conversion from quad reel of this fine Tom Dowd mix (a favorite track: the instrumental "Valdez in the Country"), but man, this is one of those albums you'd kill to hear in a high-res modern format. Such a beautiful record.

Isaac Hayes's other soundtracks: Tough Guys and Truck Turner (both from 1974). Kind friends lent me SurroundMaster decodes of both albums, plus a Q8 conversion of TG. More of that moody, urbane instrumental jazz-funk (instrumental except for the theme songs, that is, which--shut your mouth!--may be even more of a hoot than "Shaft!"). Lots of separation in the mix, even on the SQ versions. Sonics on Tough Guys are a little thin, though, and light on bass. Wouldn't it be great to have these, together with Shaft, in a brand-new box set?
