possibly Ralphie4ears.. my recollection fwiw was it was a case of fake news rather than Propaganda but i will give it a fair crack all over again, 4-sure πŸ‘Œ
I'm pretty sure it's not an upmix old bean?! There's some cool effects that go around? Granted it's not super discrete. Maybe I gave it too much (of a) crack myself?! πŸ˜‚

ah i dunno Mr.S.. just checking it out now.. yes there's round the room stuff in the first track which feels cool when playing the mix as a whole in Surround..

but the way its mixed is weird for a more modern 5.1.. they mixed dry lead vocals in the Rear, then the same vocals reverbed in Front L&R and the same vocals dry again in the Centre.. which frankly feels wrong πŸ€”

further investigation required! 🧐

edit: the next track does much the same thing, with stuff moving around the room all the time which gives the illusion of Surround but unlike how its used on some of the better old Quads (PIR 360 pans come to mind, they fit in the context of the music itself) or pans by Scheiner, Wilson et al, here it isn't really very satisfying and just feels like a gimmick when its overused in such a way.. or maybe even a fudge to cover a lack of multitracks to work with and hence an upmix (like Herbie Hancock's "Secrets", where stuff goes round the room so you think it must be the real deal but it's actually a loada musty old fake balls! πŸ˜‚).

edit: got track 3 on now.. come on, you've got to be kidding! this is definitely not real its almost mono with all the music in the Centre Front and just stupid sound effects panned around!! haha!! total balls for sure! its making me laugh anyway so it'd get a couple of points in a Poll for that at least! πŸ˜‚

Ahh yeah I think you are indeed correct Monsieur Blue. Apologies, I will write my lines on the chalkboard tomorrow! 😁

Do ya know what I did?! πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ I put my AVR into surround mode to hear Ken Bruce playing in all the speakers on Radio 2. And so it wasn’t playing β€˜Direct’ later when I went to check the track on SACD. So in effect I was upmixing an upmix! Give that a try it might sound better?!

I listened again after your post and thought oh, this doesn't sound the same now! But thought I might be able to sneak off without being noticed! I would have got away with it, if it weren't for you meddling kids! πŸ¦Ήβ€β™‚οΈπŸ˜‚

I will reflect and leave you with a quote from that great bard, Yazz. Where it seems to hear this album in surround "the only way is up".... πŸ” Baby!

ah love Ken.. that sonorous delivery demands some form of pseudo-Surround!! πŸ’˜

haha.. i will give it a go and upmix the upmix oh yeah!! 😁
i think some of that Propaganda disc may be in proper-gander Surround.. but even some of that's been mixed quite weirdly! then there's things there that have got to be upmixes, kinda crude ones since in all fairness it was fairly early days for all that, where you've effectively got the same stuff happening in all channels at once with some level shifting and manipulation of elements (presumably bits extracted from the Stereo?) popping up hither and thither! its nifty but it ain't the real thing baby! πŸ€—

It's similar to BS's other Katatonia remixes - far better dynamic range than the stereo version, with plenty of discrete elements in the rears (rhythm guitars, harmony vocals, keyboards/mellotron, etc). The biggest difference I've noticed so far is that the vocals are mostly confined to the center speaker, whereas Fall Of Hearts and Great Cold Distance had them primarily in the front channels with a bit of reinforcement in the center. There are supposedly some guitar lines missing from the 5.1 version, but I don't know the original album well enough to tell.
@edisonbaggins

I agree with @sjcorne it's a good active mix with a lot of discrete information in the rears. The download has no documentation, so can't confirm the BS mix. I found the vocals were at times confined to the center and other a full front stage. Its a good album and very enjoyable mix.

And a pretty amazing album as well. So glad D~V could get access to some of these Tomita treasures. Discrete masterpieces, IMO!

BTW, are you in the Christmas spirit Yet? And hopefully, Mrs. Gos is feeling better. Just lower the volume on your ATMOS system.
Yeah, I'm good. I left work early today, wrapped a couple presents for my boys (ok, they are men). Glass of Cabernet....

Mrs Gos? No, she is hurting. We just can't figure out what's going on. MRI came clean, yet she has non stop migraines, that put her in bed most of the time.

I'm not a doctor but I heard those botox treatments for migraines are very effective! That's horrible, Gene. We are all rooting for her!

Interesting! I wonder if her headaches are a result of your basement flooding. It could be a hidden mold issue.

Eh.....I hope not. I mean, I wouldn't think so. We were quick to clean up the mess, and pretty much gutted the basement down to the concrete blocks. Scrubbed them down with bleach solutions, then applied a waterproofing.
