Mike Bloomfield, Al Kooper and Stephen Stills SUPER SESSION [Columbia Records/SONY Japan SACD QUAD remaster] Is it time to retire my Audio Fidelity Multi~CH 5.1 SACD remixed by Al Kooper? Methinks, YES! Again, SONY Japan has released a stunning discrete 4 corner QUAD SACD in their special 7" packaging at a price point which almost negates AF's previous effort. Very Highly Recommended.
Barclay James Harvest, their 4th album dating back to 1972, Baby James Harvest containing a Blu-ray with 5.1 surround mixes and 4 CDs too. So I have 9 of these releases. I've never heard this album before but it's just as good as the rest.
Obviously there are a lot of high-profile releases garnering all the attention these days, but one of my favorite new releases has largely flown under the radar: a 2-CD/1-BDA set of Serge Gainsbourg's trippy L’homme à tête de chou, which can be had for under 30 bucks (US) from Amazon or jpc.de. (It came out at the end of June.)
Poussin, who has mixed pretty much the entire Gainsbourg catalogue in Atmos for Apple and Tidal (and who did the SACD and Blu-Ray for Histoire de Melody Nelson a few years back), was asked by Universal France to undertake a new, more adventurous Atmos mix for this set. He succeeded handsomely, IMO. The original streaming mix from 2021 is fine, too, though it intentionally hews close to the bone-dry, voice-forward stereo mix in its overall "feel." Details about the mixing & mastering of the BDA here; background here and here. Disc navigation is straightforward and effective.
Agreed, this is perfect, can't believe I have heard all versions of this since 1968. Michael Bloomfield Rules.
I much prefer this 2023 Japanese Hybrid SACD 4.0 over the 5.1 Audio Fidelity version.
Man everything has such good tone and seperation, really feels like I am in the studio, feeling the vibrations of the instruments.
DR's are 9, 11's, 12's, 16, 19.
I am going to need all of 2024 to listen to what I bought in 2023, what a banner year for surround.
Tesseract - War of Being. BD Atmos 7.4.4. This is how it should be done, good music and a fantastic Atmos mix. Everyone entering in to Atmos mixing should be listening to this.
