A Farewell to (Audessy) Kings. I have been playing with everything lately and after 5 years of my settings in Audessy correction, I did a manual set up, measured speaker distances, tone test with pressure meter, etc. Wow, big difference for the better. I didn't realize how much Audessy quieted things down. I have to get used to the volume knob now, I could never listen at 70db anymore. A Farewell To Kings at 34db, plenty loud enough, PCM 96Khz, 5.1, Blu Ray ripped and played through JRiver player HDMI to the big McIntosh system. I still might play around a bit, and lower the speaker settings in the set up. I still have the option of tweaking with remote 2 fronts at a time or 2 rears at a time, just have to get things correct in 5.1 the balance is perfect. I tend to like a hair more coming from fronts.

Al you need to do to listen to music without Audyssey is to simply use either Direct mode or MultEQ bypass L&R.

Talking Heads. Remain In Light.
This ebay purchase arrived this morning, on my day off. Perfect timing!

Thank you, so just to re confirm. Is it necessary to re create the Audessy set up and then use the Direct? Or is it OK to have (manual set up is what I have now) and go to Direct? Here is what McIntosh says from there manual.

Pure Direct:
Press the PURE Push-button on the Remote Control
to bypass the internal processing circuitry when
not needed. An example could be when the analog
audio output from a CD Player is connected to the
MX122 and the CD player is playing a stereo CD
disc. The settings include AUTO (default setting, the
MX122 chooses the best signal processing), DIRECT
(bypasses Back Surround and Front Height Channel
processing) and PURE DIRECT (bypasses all digital
processing).
Note: When switching between the three modes, the
sound is momentarily muted.

Just curious if when people mention using/dropping Audyssey, is that the original version of 'Audyssey" or the newer "Audyssey XT32"? I was very happily surprised with upgrading a preamp with Audyssey XT32 that really seemed to adjust my unique room acoustics to a much better sound. Especially helping with Atmos adjustments.

My McIntosh MX122 explains it as this:
Audyssey MultEQ® XT32 will calibrate the MX122 to your home theater’s unique acoustical properties, letting it deliver the clearest and most balanced – yet still earth shattering – sound possible. Each audio channel has its own 32-bit premium DAC for the best audio performance. A 9 band equalizer offers additional fine-tuning.

Listening to the fabulous John Hammond with his guitar assortment and harmonica recorded in St. Peter's Episcopal Church in NYC by the Chesky Engineers in ambient surround [Chesky/multichannel SACD]

VINE VOICE
4.0 out of 5 starsBlues from a church or how to use your acoustic guitar as a percussion instrument

Following up his excellent rockin' electric effort, Push Comes To Shove, 2009 finds Mr. Hammond alone in a NYC church with just his weathered voice, acoustic guitars, bottleneck slide and harp for the SACD Chesky Records release Rough & Tough.

The location was picked for its acoustics and the liner notes make much of the purity of the recording process. This is a stellar sounding recording of acoustic blues standards with a Tom Waits tune and a couple of Hammond originals thrown in. There is not a bum track here but on the first couple of listens, I particularly like the Muddy Waters tunes Still A Fool and I Can't Be Satisfied plus Get Behind The Mule from Tom Waits and the original Slick Crown Vic. The opener, My Mind Is Ramblin', sounds like the wheels are coming off. This is a good thing.

John Hammond is a national treasure and Rough & Tough is a great addition to the blues cannon.

I was an Audyssey aholic for years. In the last year, I found direct and more times than not, find it way more enjoyable. Which surprised me.

No problem. Our own ears in our own space are always the best judge. I like room correction but it's not a cure all for everyone's space.

Thank you

You're very welcome.

Not familiar with the Mcintosh processor but you should only have to rerun Audyssey after either changing the processors amp assign settings, a speaker/sub change or a main listener position change. Level, distance or sound mode changes are exempt from this.

I have the newest Audyssey. But who knows.....it could just be a whim on my part. Maybe I'll go back to Audyssey and think it rocks. :)

Well I went with my gut on this, redid the Audyssey set up, glad I did, better for TV watching volume control, etc. But thanks to you and Gos I now enable the Direct or the Pure Direct, not really a difference to my ears but better than just Audyssey. Still learning after all these years. The Who's Quadrophenia BD-A is a good test with the wave crashing in the beginning. Dire Straits Brothers In Arms and Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of Moon are good to, but they always sound good even when things are not set up good. Quadrophenia is good because you can tweak your system to make that disc a real power house. Thanks again, I'm good now.
