Beck, Bogert, Appice - S/T
DTS CD 44.1/20 5.1

UGH, Mike. This does sound like a DAT tape transferred to DTS ....... I'm certain you've heard the superior Sony Japan SACD in that luxurious 7" packaging which smokes the DTS 'relic.'

But at least DTS Entertainment paved the way for SURROUND MUSIC at a time when no one else was even attempting to do it.

Wrong thread for this but I'm currently spinning D~V's fabulous Stereo SACD of Dave Valentin's Pied Piper and I'll go on record saying that it sounds as phenomenal as any Stereo SACD reissues from MoFi, AP and Audio Fidelity.

I haven't heard the SACD. Hoping to find a deal on it some day.
I find it easy to believe it smokes this DTS disc! I'm having a good time though.

You owe it to yourself to buy the Sony Japan SACD. It's like hearing it for the first time in utmost fidelity ..... as if a giant veil had been lifted. If all the DTS RBCDs sounded as great as Lyle Lovett's Joshua Judges Ruth we wouldn't be having this discussion.

edit: Just checked ImportCD for availability and they don't even list it. But they have all the other Sony Japan Beck QUAD SACDs [ironically]. Hmmmm!

Is it really OOP as CDJapan doesn't even have it listed anymore: http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/searches?term.media_format=&q=Jeff+Beck+sacd

Found one used VG on eBay for $44, so I snagged it. Only payed a bit less for the DTS!

The big problem with the DTS for me isn't so much the sound quality, it's that the channel balances are off on most of the songs. I think the rears are too low and one is louder than the other. The 461 Ocean Boulevard DTS disc has the same problem, and the quad remaster on the Give Me Strength Blu-Ray corrected it. The SACD sounds great, though I recommend muting the unnecessary fake center they added.

Very typical Columbia rock quad mix (rhythm guitars and some drums split between the rears). If you liked Rough & Ready or The Jeff Beck Group you'll like it.

My favorite DTS disc from Miller Nevada/Mobile Fidelity International is Poco's Crazy Eyes. Great uber-discrete mix, perfectly balanced, and sounds awesome on my system. Don't love the album as much as Seven or Cantamos, but it's some damn good underrated country rock.

Although, Jonathan, considering what SONY Japan accomplished with Beck, Appice and Bogert over the DTS disc, I think POCO's Crazy Eyes would DEFINITELY benefit from the D~V 'makeover.' You're right, ALL the elements are there and waiting to be liberated in FULL HI RES QUAD SACD.

And why SONY Japan had to muck again with the original QUADs by adding a center channel is anyone's guess! Totally unnecessary.

Maybe so, Ralph, but as I've said before I think they should focus on stuff that hasn't yet been reissued digitally. It'd be great for those who missed the old DTS release (which can be tracked down now in the $30-$40 range), but I think members here (myself included) generally frown on digital surround releases being reissued again. I really do think the DTS is quite good, one of their best sounding quad discs.

Another minus is that the only title to pair it with is the live Deliverin' quad, which unfortunately is no surround spectacular. Unless an unreleased quad mix of From The Inside actually exists, as speculated here. I have that one on stereo LP and it'd be fantastic to hear an uber-discrete CBS quad mix of it.

I knew you were going to say that [doing reissues of existing Quad discs] but if D~V could reissue Crazy Eyes as one QUAD SACD for £11.99 ..... wouldn't you buy it instead of having those who don't having to pay $30~40 for the DTS version.

Jonathan, I have just about ALL the D~V QUADs and what I find amazing is there are NO channel imbalances on any of them. Even you stated the DTS RBCD of 461 Ocean Blvd. suffers from channel imbalances and was corrected in the superior [IMO] BD~A.

And I REALLY wish D~V would release a digital remaster of Ten Years After A Space In Time since that BULLSHIT DVD~V BOTCH JOB is a downright disgrace and should've been corrected by offering replacement discs. NO EXCUSE FOR THAT.

I will shout this from the rooftops: If the engineers did their job 'correctly,' the buyer wouldn't have to muck around with channel/volume imbalances to correct what should've been corrected in the final authoring/mastering stages of said discs! Perhaps they should all rip a page from the unerring Dutton Vocalion 'pride in craftsmanship' playbook!
