After listening to Steely Dan's Two Against Nature, I thought this Ry Cooder DVD-A 5.1 PCM 24/96 would be a good one to follow.
I seem to be liking my relatively new speaker settings at Center LF RF at 6db and the two rears at 2.5, I am able to groove pretty good at 25db overall.

How is the mix on this one? It's a reference movie for me and had the CD for years, but never listened to the 5.1

tbh i don't remember the Buena Vista surround mix being anything special but it has been a while since i last played it so i need to give it another go with fresh ears before i say anymore here!

That's always been my impression as well, a little lacking in the rear channels (and proportionally disappointing.)

That's a pity, there's lots of percussion and layered instruments that will let a very good mix to be created. I just checked the DVD and it has got a 5.1 mix, need to play it again, I can't remember how good or bad this is

Buena Vista is a very disappointing surround mix imo. So much more could have been done with all of the instruments involved but wasn’t. Can’t remember who did the surround remix on this one but it’s one of those releases that makes you wonder what they were thinking when they did it.
