Writer Harold Ramis said that Groundhog Day screenwriter Danny Rubin "actually took Elisabeth Kübler-Ross as a model—her five stages of death and dying—and we used that as a template for Phil Connors' progress.

• Denial: Of course, Phil initially resists the idea that's he reliving the same day over and over.
• Anger: Though Phil mainly expresses it as annoyance and irritation, some overt anger does out.
• Bargaining: Phil plays around with his situation, experimenting with his circumstances and for a time simply trying to have fun with it.
• Depression: Distraught and emotionally weary, Phil kills himself time and time again only to restart the day yet again every time.

Groundhog Day has a special significance for me. It was filmed in Woodstock IL. Woodstock is the county seat of the county where I grew up.

Each year, Woodstock Willie casts his shadow or doesn't on Groundhog Day.

My first copies of Summer Breeze, Tarkus and Kottke's Mudlark came from Woolworths and the music store on the Square.

The Square was better back then.

I watched it when it was gifted to me but not since and it’s been a while. My son and I had both enjoyed Zack Snyder’s 300 and The Watchmen, so he was the real driver behind its presence under the Christmas tree.

Here's one I forgot to add to my short list. It's the 1945 Oscar Winning Short Film "I Won't Play" Starring the great Dane Clark. Many members of the cast were also part of the 1944 War Effort Warner Film "Hollywood Canteen".

It's a perfect little film.
