Maybe? Seems unlikely, though. Why would an album uploaded by a major label use a mastering from a reissue label?
It happens. Labels often get ownership of the reissue masters. I assume they usually don’t use them because “newly remastered” on a hype sticker probably generates more sales. Plus labels and artist mgmt probably have no idea (or even care in many cases) what they have and don’t have in many cases. So they remaster it again.

But with streaming, who knows?

I haven’t compared them yet in this case.

@sjcorne and others have speculated that the old quads reappearing in Sony 360 RA and/or Dolby Audio come from digitized "flat transfers" of quad masters that were done in the 90s and 00s. If that's so, then the fact that there is so much overlap between what we're seeing now and recent reissues by Sony Japan and D-V is coincidental. (Or the result of similar calculations about what in the Sony back catalog would be of most interest to contemporary listeners.)

In the case of all the titles that overlap with recent D-V or Sony Japan reissues (Return To Forever, Johnnie Taylor, Harold Melvin, Jeff Beck, etc), these would probably be digital transfers of the '70s quad masters done recently for the SACDs, but - as you say - left 'as is' without Dutton or Sony's mastering moves.

However, there are other titles (Isley Brothers' 3+3, Blue Oyster Cult's Tyranny & Mutation) where it sounds like EQ and perhaps even compression have been applied. I'd guess Isley's uses the same 'manipulated to 5.1' master as the old Sony SACD, but who knows when or why the BoC quad was tampered with? A conspiracy theorist might suggest it was done for an aborted SACD release back in the early-2000s.

I’m also inclined to agree that some of the quads showing up now could be flat digital transfers...similar to many hi-rez stereo downloads in the early days of downloads. I was simply addressing the question - which is that reissue label masters have been known to show up later on regular label reissues.

However I think the biggest reason we’re seeing overlap is because the licensing is relatively easy on these releases (for whatever reasons). I don’t think that the digital transfers have already been created are that much of a factor.

Voyage To Atlantis and Livin' In The Life seem to be Stereo only at the mo? the rest appears to be the old Quad
on the listing for the album on Apple Music, what tells you it’s a multi channel?

second question, this was originally a quad mix, but it’s now a 5.1. Is this a new mix, or are they taking the quad mix and then putting something in the center and sub through a little trick?

it sounds amazing

It's the quad mix in a 5.1 container - there's nothing in the center, and the LFE is probably some combination of the original four channels run through a low-pass filter.

I love the sound of stuff recorded on 2” tape in a surround format. Detailed and round/warm at the same time

The original album (tracks 1-7) is all quad. The bonus tracks (tracks 8-10) are mono/stereo. I think you’re mixing up the bonus versions of those songs with the album versions.

See my answer above. It seems when ALL tracks on an album are not surround mixes, Apple Music generally (or always?) doesn’t give the album the Dolby Atmos or Dolby Audio designation.

I don’t know of any way other way to identify these other than trial and error. It would be nice if Apple could designate for these types of albums - where the original album is all surround, but bonus tracks are not surround - as surround with a caveat of some sort that tracks 8-10 are stereo (or whatever).

no, i'm not mixing anything up, tracks 5 & 6 are Stereo here. maybe some regional issue idk.

Tracks 5&6 also in Dolby Audio here :)

oh wow! thanks for the feedback, then it can't be that! i will try deleting the album from my library and then adding it back again, that worked once before with some Atmos that wasn't playing back properly 🤞

edit: yeay! it worked! 🎉🥳 all in Dolby Audio and i can tell straight away its all the lovely old Quad! thanks for the help etc., folks! 🤗
