Oh, and the album on third or fourth listen is sitting well with me. I'm not sure I fully embrace all the growly vocals, but they're not distracting/poorly used. I've yet to dive in deeper since I don't have the lyrics in front of me, mostly enjoying the usual variety of styles in their dark metal prog mold.

Same here, not sure yet to rate it. Has really good tracks and musicianship on it but those growls.... gggrr. Not my cup of tea. Shame there is not an instrumental version cause that would be " a way out" to avoid those cookie monster vocals. I really like Heritage and Damnation better...

The only album where I really liked the growls was on Watershed. Tracks like The Lotus Eater were just virtuosic in how the growls were implemented.

It's really cool, and I also liked that he chose to sing clean over the blast beat sections, when usually the opposite is expected.

That said, I think his best sounding growls are those from Deliverance and Ghost Reveries. But I'm someone who loves growls (when they are good, and Akerfeldt's are among the very best I've ever heard - yes, there are talented and untalented growlers out there, just like it happens with "normal" singers), not someome who tolerates them or simply dislikes them. I listen to many, many bands whose vocals are growls 100% of the time (huge death metal fan). So I guess my perception is different to that of the listeners who somewhat tolerate them and might find them acceptable in some specific sections, depending on the musical context.

I found extreme metal vocals quite natural since the very first moment I heard some (this was around 23 years ago). Maybe there's something wrong with me :ROFLMAO:

This album is similar to me in that sense.

I'm normally not a fan of growls in any fashion. Yet the way Mikael uses the growls within the album, well I kind of like it.

Using the growls to accentuate the more aggressive darker passages without being overbearing.

The music is outstanding and the surround mix is pretty good too.

Maybe? Like "kinda pregnant"?

Opeth was my gateway into these harder genres, and along with Gojira are the only bands I listen to who use the growly vocals (and not on every track or section). I find it hard to understand the lyrics when sung in that manner. The lyrics matter, right?

I've been listening to the (non ATMOS) 7.1 mix and extracted the audio from the Bluray disc.
I notice in Audacity there is no .1 (LFE) content, but I actually think this is a good thing.
To me, the .1 (LFE) channel in music is perhaps more trouble than it's worth when low frequency content can be mixed in the other channels (especially the front Left and Right) and then simply low passed to subwoofer(s).

Anyway, I think this is a very good album and the surround mix and presumably the ATMOS mix is seemingly more dynamic than the stereo mix.

Amazon has been very hit/miss lately, not just on physical music releases. It's possible a combination of their sheer size/bloat, push to maximize dwindling margin, alienating a percentage of the local work force (and trying to automate perhaps too much) with lousy jobs, and going to a primarily internal delivery infrastructure is finally catching up with them. Logistics at their scale is dizzying.

My order is still alive and scheduled for sometime early December. I'm not concerned there won't be copies for the coming months and I've retained a stereo version so I can enjoy the album while I wait. At this point I'm as curious to see if they actually fulfill the order as I am the opportunity to finally hear the surround mix. :ROFLMAO:
Bluray arrived Dec 4 (yesterday). Between the release date getting pushed back and these supply / logistics issues, they're trying really hard to kill the last bit of physical sales aren't they.

Mine was allegedly posted by Rarewaves last Friday, still no sign of it, the strangest company I regularly buy from

Exactly the same here 🤔
But I've been here before with Rarewaves.
Last time I gave them a week and contacted them, they promised to post another one and lo and behold the original turned up the next day.
I stopped the replacement being sent.

My Tull Christmas album was "posted" by Rarewaves on Monday and arrived today. Presumably posted for them means moved to their postboy to take to the post office on his next run 🤷‍♂️

The first time I ordered from them was two items, one arrived a week before the other although both were posted the same day, the only time I had great service was when I pre-ordered something and it arrived a day early!, still, their prices, free p&p and the points make up for the generally slow speed

Funny you say that, an unrelated Rarewaves order was split up but assigned the same tracking number in their system. The first arrived under that original tracking number, but the other two items arrived several days later with their own tracking numbers [which are nowhere to be seen in their ordering system]. Not the greatest transparency in the process, but I got my goods.

Mine arrived on the day of release (I ordered from the band website). Unfortunately I havn’t been able to listen to surround music for about a year, so it just went on top of stack (it’s been a good year for surround so the stack is getting tall!)

Will you start at the bottom and work up, start at the top and work down or pick and choose carefully?
