Err, Umm

I am a rather large fool at the best of times and I am a bit dumb on these damned receivers. Some of the genius guys in this forum will no doubt correct me if I am wrong!!

Here is your rear panel:

I think you are correct to take the L/R zone 2 output and put the SM decode to the input multichannel zone 1.

Re those 2 recordings, do you know what format they were recorded in? Your best default mode if its not SQ is the "INVOLVE " mode for all else.

If you have a "switched " smart outlet, plug the SM into it and leave the SM on/ off button in the inwards ON position and all should automatically turn on.
I have an AVC-X8500HA, but I use an external Phone pre-amp connected to the SM2 with a switch to take either the TT or Blu-ray stereo o/ps to the SM2. The most irritating thing with the Denon is having to go into Set-up to switch to the multi-channel analogue input, it can't be done via a remote button, or at least I haven't found any other way.

Thanks Chucky! Ordered some fresh RCA cables today so I'll be ready when it arrives.

The Steely Dan Quad vinyl pressings don't specifically say if they're SQ or QS. Maybe you or another reader has some insight? Discogs entries for my specific pressings below:

The SD quads are QS encoded. Use the Involve setting. Actually I don't know that the evaluation board gives you a choice of SQ. just Involve/QS.

Duncan: I spent a little time figuring out how to assign the 7.1 Input to the AUX 1 input on my remote through the settings. Also changed the name of the input so it will display "Surr Master" on the Denon when I choose it. Happy to walk you through the steps to customize your setup too. DM me.

Thought I'd share here in the chat as well. Here's step by step instructions to assign the 7.1 Input to a source on a Denon AVR-X8500HA. All of this is done with your remote and video screen prompts.

With your remote, switch to AUX1 (or whatever available source you want to assign the 7.1 input). If it doesn’t let you switch to it, you must “unhide” the source in settings. See * below for steps to do this first.

1. Hit Setup… Inputs… Input Select… Enter… Enter again… Right Arrow to 7.1CH IN…Enter… Back.

2. Up Arrow to Source Rename… Enter… Scroll to AUX1… Enter… Use Keyboard to rename AUX1 to “Surr Master”. OK. Back. Back. Back to blank or Denon screen on your video.

3. Now, when you hit the AUX1 button on your remote, your AVR should display “Surr Master” and “7.1 Ch In.”

Hope that helps! : )

*To unhide a source that was previously hidden:
Setup… Inputs… Hide Sources… Scroll to Aux1 (or whichever one you want to assign)… Enter… Right Arrow to Show… Enter… Back out until you're back to a blank or Denon screen on your video.

Dear Charlie

I would really like to see the new evaluation decoder board. Even the layout would be interesting.

Thanks
