The Cars in Surround would be totally rad...does anybody know why it never got released? Was it just done nearing the death of the DVD-A?
There is a fan made 5.1 version of their first album floating around out there in was done from Rock Band/Guitar hero discrete tracks I think.Sounds pretty good as does the Boston one.Granted they're not full multi's but can sound good.

What a fascinating subject, and you guys really know a lot.
I see the list that 4 ears posted and many fascinating titles.
As a collector of music, I have not yet turned down a Rhino Quadio, and have yet to have the opinion that any of the releases were (n).
On that same note, collection, I would like to collect all that become available.
As you all have said, many variables come into play, before a release can be released.

I have some questions:
Dutton Vocalion seems to have one direction, different titles and a excellent array of Country Music.
Rhino seems to be getting all in, with new life for Quad (Quadio).
Japan seems to be masters of the Quad Sony Catalog?
Super Deluxe Edition, seems to have found a niche of titles being remixed, 5.1/Atmos.

As a consumer of music, using these 4 company's as a model, are they competing with each other?
A release goes to the highest bidder?
Are they just trying to get anything, so there company can survive the small niche surround market?
Why would Frank Sinatra titles be untouchable?
Does the big fire that wiped out so many tapes, make all of this a problem?
Don't forget my favorite surround label Cherry Red!
They have been quietly remixing old catalogue into surround for a few years now.
The Be Bop Deluxe Vandergraf G Hawkwind,Andy Jackson,Barclay James Harvest and Nektar have all been fantastic!

There is some promise on the horizon though...

I did an artist search on Rhino , and found out that 3 of their aquired artists were involved with quad releases.

Kraftwerk-Autobahn (some albums now streaming in atmos)
Curtis Mayfield-Roots
Curtis Mayfield-Back To The World
I'd like to maybe know if the Curtis Mayfield's are as bad as the conversions I've heard. I think I have a Roots that is said to be a Q4, but with the quality of a Q8. I'm afraid to ask or to hear the answer. Then there was a fire at Curtis's home and tapes got burned and some with water damage. Might not even be worth speaking about.

Cherry Red just announced an Emerson, Lake and Powell box set. It contains all the previously released material from the short-lived trio; their sole studio album, a live album and a disc of rehearsals. It's a shame that they didn't do a surround mix of the studio album. That one has the potential for a great surround mix. The album was originally released through Universal though, so who knows whether or not the multi tracks perished in the big fire.

I was surprised to see though that Cherry Red had acquired the rights to their catalog. @Stephen W Tayler , do you think there is any possibility of a future surround mix for this?

THE JAMES GANG
Like Fredblue sez: "RHINO, BRING ON THE BIG GUNS!"
No Joe Walsh on Miami, but still a great album and quadraphonic mix.

There is another Live Cars floating around called Moving In Quadio (Live In Chicago 1978), that I would argue sounds better than the Rock Band mix of the self titled.

The only label I can think which has not had a single quad title appear on modern disc is A&M. I would have liked to hear Joan Baez' "Diamonds and Rust" from a qood quad master. I would assume that one was a real 4.0 quad mix. A&M's quad masters may be now burnt toasted flakes.
The A&M Rick Wakeman quads re-released a few years ago were all SQ decodes or CD-4 transfers.

Frank Zappa claimed in an interview that he retained the rights to this album when he and his manager spilt up and the Straight and Bizarre record label catalogs needed to be divided up between them in the settlement. Frank apparently wanted that album which he produced strictly so he could prevent it's reissue from ever happening. No love lost between him and Fisher. Both of the two CD issues of this album (UK and Japan) are unofficial needle drops.
If you've heard them, can you comment on the sound quality? Is one CD preferred over the other?

I believe that "Roots" was only released as a Q8. I have checked Mark Anderson's Discography as well as Discogs. I see no reference to any Q4.
https://www.surrounddiscography.com/quaddisc/quadQRP.htmI have a Copy of "Back To The world" Q4 on Ampex. As far as I remember it sounded fantastic as did all of the Ampex reels.

Well for my tastes I wouldn't mind some of the European WEA quad master pieces.

Passport -Handmade
Deaf School -Second Honeymoon
Absolute Elsewhere-In Search of Gods(w/Bill Bruford)

To a lesser extent:

Fats Domino - Live Montreux, Josephine
Ralph McTell -Right Side Up

Of the unreleased bunch , in priority order ;

Rod Stewart- Atlantic Crossing
Joni Mitchell - Miles Of Aisles
Foghat - Energized
James Taylor - In The Pocket
J Geils Band - Bloodshot
Dionne Warwick-Track Of The Cat

And..Billy Cobham -Spectrum

Other than those , the regular quads should at least include one or more of these ;

Joni Mitchell-Court And Spark , or and , Hissing Of Summer Lawns
Jackson Browne -Late For The Sky
James Gang -Miami
James Taylor -Gorilla
New Seekers -Best
Carly Simon -Any of the FIVE

If I could only pick one from this batch....a tough choice for sure....I think it would be Rod Stewart. I'm not sure Rod had any quad releases back in the day. So this would be a nice get!

That additional Joni would pair well with Court and Hissing for a small, but nice, box set! Same goes for JT. Rhino did such a stunning job on Chicago and Doobies! (I still think Carly Simon would make the best box set, though. 4 + her greatest hits. 🙂)

Just for information sake , Rod Stewart should possibly have ....
Mercury's 'Smiler' !!
In quad , as was announced in Billboard, as Rod's first quad album .
However it would be with Universal, though.

I most certainly would like very much , any of Rod's 70 's albums in quad including those with 'The Faces'. With the Faces it would have to be a newly minted quad , as I had Steve check this possibility as well.

Well... I think if they could, then they should go in and mix a few albums in 5.1 and with a strong quad layer. Steven Wilson would not decline.

Faces - A Nod is as Good as a Wink
Alice Cooper - Killer
Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
AC/DC - Highway to Hell

Good selection, but I would prefer these albums in a newly mixed quad version, as was mentioned as being a distinct possibility .

Oxford Dickie believes the stereo "Roots" is an unlabelled EV-4. Having listened to a decode of it myself it is remarkably active and discrete, probably the most I've ever heard on EV-4.

Thanks to Mark Anderson, we know WEA prepped a few titles for Quad that never got released - the Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations” best-of, Aretha’s “With Everything I Feel In Me”, ”Gord’s Gold”, Bonnie Raitt’s “Takin’ My Time”, to name a few. If they could unearth some of these, it would be great. We’ve already seen MC releases of other albums from artists like ELP & Billy Cobham.

I’m also curious how they got hold of the War quad masters. Can they get hold of the unreleased quad mix of “Deliver The Word” as well? What about other Liberty/UA artists like Canned Heat, Buddy Rich, Ike & Tina and The Ventures?

They could also do a Quadio Eagles box, with the 2 released + 2 prepped but unreleased titles. That would move the needle.

Pie in the sky 😊
It really boggles the mind if Don Henley doesn't want money.
