Santana - III Sony Japan Quad SACD (Release date: November 24th, 2021)

Mine arrived around 7pm…. Just thrilled with this! 41 minutes of squinching, contorting, air drumming and guitaring…WHEW!!!! Play this one loud

The quad mix: I knew this quad mix before and I think it's great from the opening of Batuka. Compared to the tape rip, well, this is more discrete, has better fidelity. Surprisingly, it is very close to the Sony 360 from Tidal, even though the latter is lossy. I'm positive it is the some transfer and mastering, one pressed as a SACD and the other released online.

The Sony360 files are 44100 or 48000 Hz sample rate? We all know that SACD uses 44100 as a baserate (=x1, x2, x4) so if the Sony360 are coming from the same "mastering session" transfer these should be 44100 and not 48000.

The Sony 360 is 48000, I’m talking about the conversion from MPEG-H to Flac. I don’t know what the source transfer for the 360 or the SACD is, but a direct A/B comparison in Audacity tells me they sound so similar to be from the same transfer/mastering. I don’t have hard proof, just my conclusion.

I have to compare Santana I and Abraxas, SACD vs 360. I’ll let you know!

I heard that the liner notes in III mention the forthcoming Caravanserai SACD in the 50th series. So that speaks well for Welcome and Borbo coming as well.

From the bits and pieces 'reviews' I've gathered, a COMPLETE SUCCESS. Now if DHL would only get the ball rollin' and drop it on my doorstep!

I'm waiting until the US discount retail sites get it in with the black friday or after christmas or whatever sale. Same as I did with Bitches Brew and the first two Santana SACDs from Japan.
