SDE - payment issues? (excised from Who's Next announcement thread)

I've just been reading this thread with interest. My credit card has been hacked twice in the last 6 months. I've been going through where this might have come from. I have up to date protection on all my devices. I have placed a lot of orders with SDE this year, I always use a credit card, rather than Paypal. Coincidence . I'm not sure now. Do I risk ordering the new Ferry, I'm not sure now.

On a lot of sites you can select the Paypal option and enter a credit card there, without even needing to signup for a Paypal account. If purchasing from SDE, using Paypal seems like an obvious necessity at this point.

I just got notified today my credit card got hacked with two fraudulent charges and Im getting a new one sent to me.

First time in several years this has happened to me.
And for the first time in months I made an SDE purchase for the Elton bluray on the 16th.
I cant help but think my purchase on SDE is related to this happening.....

I will have to learn how to use paypal for any further purchases on SDE. We have no way of knowing outside of QQ how many others may have experienced hacks making these purchases.

Thanks, I'll do that for SDE in future. I do have a paypal account, but the credit card linked to that is the compromised one that is now cut up and in the bin and awaiting a new one!

Just wanted to add a data point... I placed two orders in the past month (The Who and Elton) and have had no issues with fraudulent charges. The orders were placed with two different credit cards and I even went the extra mile for danger and ordered one over hotel wifi! For both orders, I used the credit card option on the SDE site and did not use the Shop or Paypal options. Will update the thread if anything pops up on my credit cards but nothing so far.

As a past "victim" using my debit card I can irrevocably say use I followed the advice here with PayPal and you're good to go.

I was just checking my security settings on my iPhone and came across this. I then went to the website to change my password and for the life of me I cannot find any way to change my password. Any suggestions?

Log out, then when you log back in, click the Forgot Password link which should force a reset.

From what I remember you can't change your email address easily either!

I had to change my email address a few months ago. New ISP that did not offer email, plus it had to be changed anyway.
Some places make it a royal pain to do, others not so much. But when you have 40-50 places to keep up with it's all a pain. lol.
Sometimes it's easier to just create a new account.

I do also use the same credit card and email for a number of online purchases, including Amazon, so I can't be 100% sure where my information has been lifted but I'm changing the payment method to PayPal, as others have recommended.

I'm sorry to hear this. I just bought Avalon today and at the last moment remembered about the hacking so used Paypal, even though their exchange rate is crap, adding a pound or two to the transaction, but better that than getting hacked.

It was a sophisticated hack too - the credit card company said that I had authenticated the transaction from my mobile phone, using a passkey! The hacker had booked a two room apartment for one night in Athens, Greece, using a website I've never used. I received a booking confirmation for the apartment, so I phoned the contact number, using an encrypted phone, which doesn't display my number. The person who answered the phone seemed genuine and was confused, as no one had shown up to the apartment to stay! Whatever the story, it's obviously a scammer "testing the waters", to see if the credit card and email worked, before going for a much larger sum! Fortunately, I'm notified for every credit card purchase I make, with push notifications on my phone.

The SDE shop doesn't contain any of my credit card or personal details - only my order history. So any leak from them must come via the Shop.app. And yes - you actually have to apply to Shop.app to opt out of them sharing all your information for targeted advertising etc! Which takes up to seven days! I never opt in for any information like this, so anyone with a Shopify or Shop account should check their data and privacy settings. And I've deleted the credit card they had on file.....

Be aware that the Shop app freely distributes your email and purchase information all over the place! The Shop app isn't very good for tracking anything outside the USA, either. It has problems tracking international postal services (such as deliveries from the SDE shop) and frequently can't track certain couriers, such as DHL from the UK. Much better to use the original sites, which have been used for ordering, rather than a third party app, which accesses your email and uses it freely.

I will be very wary of making any future purchases online, where it is not possible to use two-step verification!
