Does anyone know whether Sony hast stopped production of this player? At least in Europe there is barely stock at dealers and for remaining players prices are rocketing even for used or refurbished ones!

They just announced an updated version of the X700- but updated seems to mean no wifi or streaming apps. Unclear if anything is actually improved.

I've read they no longer have any players for sale on their website. Could be they were waiting for this to drop- and hopefully a new version of the X800.

So in the US still available, in Europe so so and prices going up.
Would be a shame this model is going e.o.l. without successor.
The X700 would be an alternative and still available but doesn't play DVD-A afaik and therefore out for me.

Maybe they woke up to the fact that not having any readout screen was a big negative for todays market. A universal player should have a way to read the menus either off a CD or a BD. A 800M3 that had a full readout plus play most of the esoteric disc formats even at twice the current retail pricing would be a market killer.

They had one: UBP-X1100ES. That model was discontinued more than three years ago, leaving the X800 as Sony's flagship model. Frankly, I don't like having a screen glowing when listening to music, especially surround mixes. When Best Buy posted a returned X1100 at a Louisville location, I gratefully drove 300 miles to retrieve it.

I can't speak about this unit in particular but most have an adjustable screen brightness to taste.
The glowing screen didn't dissuade you enough to stop you from driving 300 miles to buy one. LOL

It is a concerning matter although if you go to Sony.com you rarely see anything to be in stock, no cameras, no camcorders, no players, and not even Xperia phones. Although upon checking just now, they have the X800M2 in stock.

This situation reminds me of folks that purchased an extra Blu-Ray player to keep it stashed and unopened as a backup.
