Yes they know what they are doing! I might buy this then sell the CDs. I don't think anyone will pay over £20 for a 4 CD set though. That being said some may want the CDs and not the Blu Ray(i am thinking some of those on Hoffman forums)? If i could get £30 back i would be happy enough.

Got to be worth a try (y) I'll bet somebody will want the CDs and the book and all that stuff. SHF-ers may only want the album CD if it sounds better than the original CD though I'm not holding my breath (truth be told I'm prepared for ultra-compression on this one.. BDA included.. but you never know! We may just get a pleasant surprise!

I have just pre-ordered. Hope it is worth it! I couldn't resist.

Well for once its worked in my favour, I ordered at the crazy price (5.1 addiction is expensive!) now its cheaper yippee

Adam, I am thinking the same thing. I must be insane as I just did the preorder as well which might be a total waste of money. Last year I saw that someone locally was selling 300 cd's for $100 and of these mostly 80's,90's albums one of them in that box was Superunknown. How do I know this, I bought those 300 cd's which was a crazy bargain when thinking how much we pay now just to get it in surround in these uber expensive box sets.

I've been trying to find out more about the blu-ray. I've emailed the band's site and been searching the net - nothing. Anyway I have it pre-ordered on "blind faith".

US74.80 on the American Amazon site now.

I really don't think the 5.1 mix will be "loud", seems they often escape this as I've noticed on a lot of concert DVDs/BDs recently. I'm hoping this will be the one dynamic option, of course it will be fantastic if we get DR10 on the high rez stereo also.

Plenty of Blu Rays are very loud unfortunately. Fingers crossed this one will be great.

Those are mostly UMe HFPA releases, stereo only. I'm talking in general about 5.1 mixes. I don't find too many 5.1 mixes are seeing God-awful levels of loudness wars (DR5 or less) like 2.0 mixes are.

Keep collecting you will find quite a few live ones do :}
Slash, Slipknot, Plan B, Rush(all 4), Alter Bridge, Alanis morisette(although not as bad as the others mentioned)

First two groups listed here are my audio then concerts - http://www.blu-ray.com/community/collection.php?u=1916

So far I haven't found many of these have high levels of compression, perhaps only The Prodigy one but it's shot like Paul Greengrass' brutal job on the 2nd and 3rd Bourne movies, copious amounts of shaky cam, so I haven't spent much time with that one.

Only Rush album I own is Moving Pictures (Blu-ray) and it's DR11 or better according to the DR database. (I say or better because it doesn't say whether it's listing the 2.0 or the 5.1)

Last concert I got, which I begrudgingly took on DVD, was Dave Matthews Band Live Trax Vol 28, the stereo track was DR9, the 5.1 track was DR13. Unfortunately it's 448Kbps Dolby which has its own issues.

My point is not that none exist, only that "they often escape". I'm sure if I "keep collecting" and reach 1,000 concerts I'll find "quite a few" but it's not going to be anywhere near the percentage of loud releases as it would be if I went out and bought 1,000 of today's CD/stereo releases.

Rush LIVE concerts. I was specifically mentioning live Blu Rays.

And I was specifically mentioning 5.1 mixes, given that we're talking about the upcoming 5.1 mix of a studio album in this thread.

You said "plenty of Blu-rays" are "very loud" and I disagree.

Plenty to many! I have heard over 180 Live Blu Rays( i have lovefilm account). It is silly that any are super loud. None are going to heard on a jukebox, radio or iphone.

Have you heard Slipknot Blu Ray? Damn that is loud.

There are too many that have been DRC'd but that's not totally fair on the HFPA's, quite a few have great DR and some have really excellent DR by modern day remaster standards.

case in point, the Lionel Richie HFPA with DR 14..

http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/view/52071

..which I reckon sounds wonderful, for anyone here who might be interested.

as for the upcoming Soundgarden, I'm hoping it won't be compressed of course... but won't be too long a wait to see (hear!) either way.

What is the DR of the Slipknot disc?

I have no idea but i have my receiver set to -24db upon powering on. I do not turn the slipknot disc up. It is already loud. In comparison i have SW drive home at -18db when listening and that is pretty loud(at that volume). Bon Jovi Blu Ray i can crank up to -10db on receiver, same with Dio Holy Diver.

The disasterpieces DVDby Slipknot is even louder! I listen to that at -25db.

So the Lionel release was actually remastered?

I think Les miserables sounds great as well!

It was not meant to be a blanket statement that the HFPAs are all rubbish, only that if there are "plenty of Blu-rays that are loud", when talking about audio Blu-rays, they are most likely HFPAs. The problems with the HFPA releases are complete lack of transparency about the source material but I agree that some are great, the 5.1 mix of Beck's Sea Change is DR12, very nice.

In my experience discrete 5.1 mixes are generally dynamic. The chances of us getting an open dynamic 5.1 Soundgarden mix, if it's being done from the multitracks and not just the stereo mix with reverb like some have suggested happened with The Pixies Minotaur collection, are far greater than us getting an open dynamic mix of Superunknown in stereo. Would you agree?

I don't know for sure but.. Lionel got remastered for the Deluxe Edition the year before and the DR avg of the original CD is a dB or two better, so I presumed the HFPA used the remaster, though I've no hard facts I'm afraid. Either way, sounds fab if you don't have already and Lionel's even remotely your cup of tea, its a must have HFPA imho.

the Les Mis fidelity is great, the mix is pretty good.. I just can't abide the vocal stylings of Messrs Crowe, Jackman, et al.. but that's a personal thing, I won't hold that against that HFPA. it is only a B&O promo of course, didn't get a commercial release.
