It was not meant to be a blanket statement that the HFPAs are all rubbish, only that if there are "plenty of Blu-rays that are loud", when talking about audio Blu-rays, they are most likely HFPAs. The problems with the HFPA releases are complete lack of transparency about the source material but I agree that some are great, the 5.1 mix of Beck's Sea Change is DR12, very nice.
In my experience discrete 5.1 mixes are generally dynamic. The chances of us getting an open dynamic 5.1 Soundgarden mix, if it's being done from the multitracks and not just the stereo mix with reverb like some have suggested happened with The Pixies Minotaur collection, are far greater than us getting an open dynamic mix of Superunknown in stereo. Would you agree?
I respect that doby I'd be the first one to say way too many HFPA's are compressed, which is just daft.
The Beck is terrific (I'm guessing its pretty much identical to the SACD/DVD-A?) and the Marvin Gaye: What's Going On HFPA's pretty respectable too (DR 11)..

..but these are among the exception rather than the rule!
I do agree, the chances are high that it will be dynamic etc.. it's just that whatever remasters up on iTunes (I flicked thru the other day to refresh my memory) sounded dreadful to me and it just made me judder at the thought of another Universal balls up!
