After listening to a few songs from this, I believe I'm passing on this one. Brit-pop was never my bag

Frankly never heard of them before.

Checked out on Qobuz. One or two songs but the rest, no interest. I don't have a problem with "Brit-pop" but this album just isn't compelling for my taste. We've had a string of classic & compelling titles, so I can't complain. So this is a pass for me; I'll wait to see what #12 brings :)

Really curious to see what Steven was able to do with this, the stereo mix sounds appropriately 'big' but also kind of congested. The Wikipedia page mentions "4-track recorders" were used during the album sessions, so presumably the multis are pretty limited...

Heard the name before but not the music until I just sampled the two video clips on the SDE site.
Didn’t like either song and thoroughly unsure I could listen to an albums worth of that guys voice.
I’ll need to sample more, on my home system, before deciding

Stoked about this release. It's a modern classic, under the radar for many in the US. It's lumped in as "Britpop", but it's more than that. More of a lovechild between Britpop and glam rock. Brett Anderson would've made a great androgynous front man in the era of Ziggy Startdust, and this is Bernard Butler's finest work as a guitarist, in my opinion.

As for surround sound, I'll be very curious to see what SW has done with it. There are some parts of this where I can envision some movement (the phased guitars in Moving and Animal Nitrate, for example) and some atmospherics that may work, but one of the most atmospheric tunes (Breakdown) is apparently an upmix. Will see. SW has never disappointed.

Cool stuff! Really looking forward to hearing Steven Wilson mix the album that brought in Britpop! It's a great album, Suede were massive over here after this.

Fun fact - Ricky Gervais used to be their manager before he stopped working in music and went into comedy!
Totally oblivious about the ricky gervais part.

I just listened a second time with a bit more focus.

I imagine if I was into that style of music, I’d rank it pretty high. The songs do sound well done. Some interesting guitar here and there which always catches my ear.

I tried to imagine what Wilson would do with this. There are some moments where I imagined certain unique parts that could go in the heights/rears, but not a lot. Wilson is clever, though... I’m sure he’s worked his magic on it.

Just don’t think I’d give this more than one initial listen if I bought it.

Having missed the Brit Pop parade, I’m giving the album my first listen now. Definitely evoking some rocking Bowie (Man Who thru Aladdin). Breakdown seems like a good candidate for a surround mix. Good hooks in Metal Mickey. I lean towards more electronic stuff but this is beguiling.

Has anyone mentioned that this mix was done by Steven Wilson before today?

edit...
I just looked at the Tidal credits, and no mention of Mr. Wilson...

Cool. I pre-ordered it. Hope Dog Man Star and Coming Up get a similar release too.

And for the record, Suede pre-dated the Britpop invasion by a bit. Think of them as a bridge between The Stone Roses/Happy Mondays and the avalanche of garbage that came after (Blur were good though). Seems like splitting hairs, and it might be, but Suede don't fall into the Britpop bucket for moi.

Are you talking about the Atmos mix of Autofiction? I don't think he did that one, only the debut which doesn't come out on disc or streaming until July.
