Now, MFSL released That's The Way Of The World in stereo SACD a few years ago, would that rule out an AF sacd 4.0 treatment? Hope not, love that album and it soooo deserves the AF treatment!

AFAIK, that album's not eligible for AF to currently reissue as a Quadraphonic SACD, but hopefully, AF can release a Quadraphonic SACD of "Spirit" in the meantime. I'm sure the tapes are there just like they were for the other EW&F albums. :)

Apparently, it's been licensed by another company for reissue on SACD. (from Brian Moura a few months ago)

That's interesting. Could be Impex. They've been doing some SACDs, and they have a vinyl version of this album out currently. Sure hope it's not stereo-only.

Here's one of their newest SACDs.

Haven't heard anything from the SACD reissue labels about That's The Way of the World on a newer SACD. Last one out was from Mobile Fidelity.

Info on the 2 new Impex SACDs is over on the Stereo SACD Forum. Impex was formerly Cisco Music which also released SACD reissues in the past.

Brian with RATM debut coming, can you comment on what would be involved with a project where say SH does the stereo mastering and the original analogue multitracks are also licensed for ES to do a 5.1 mix? Is there any circumstance in which we might see AF doing a fully unique, NEW multichannel release of an older 90s title where the existing major label has already done their reissue campaign with no 5.1 mix where the album was recorded to analogue (from Sony alone for example - RATM XX 20th anniversary, Dave Matthews Band - Under the Table and Dreaming 20th, Pearl Jam - Ten 20th, all have had anniversary editions without surround mixes)?

I doubt we will ever see something like that actually happen.
Creating an entirely new mix from multitrack tape is definitely more costly than remastering an existing mix as there's usually a higher volume of tape transfers with remixing and also the cost of paying the mixing engineer to create the new mix.
Audio Fidelity works with reissuing existing mixes, and I doubt that will change anytime soon.

It's possible. There have been discussions about commissioning a new 5.1 mix for release on Audio Fidelity Multichannel SACD.
It would have to be an exceptional title where the numbers worked in terms of making the royalties and guarantees back - and some money for Audio Fidelity.

In the meantime, more titles are in development for upcoming release on Audio Fidelity Multichannel SACD.
Stay tuned.....

Of course Brian, the prospect of remixing an album from scratch is extraordinarily enticing but I'd hate to be on that committee....choosing a single bone fide crowd pleaser but I would kind of gravitate towards a contemporary one recorded after 2000 since most multichannel reissues from AF are from the 60's, 70's and 80's.

And the question of WHO would do the remixing would be paramount in ensuring its ultimate success.

It's also of course heartening that Audio Fidelity will continue to reissue classic material in multichannel as well since I've yet to be disappointed by their choices and revel in the stellar results achieved.

It seems in the last few years we've gone from almost zero to 60 with so many choices in multichannel reissues from a diversity of labels but in hindsight it also seems that we haven't even scratched the surface having been terribly spoiled by the simple fact that almost every movie and TV show, broadcast and cable, has been broadcast in 5.1 for a great number of years...which ultimately points to a serious disconnect between the motion picture and music industries.

The record label and artist have final say on who does the remixing to 5.1.
It's been discussed and hasn't been ruled out. Time will tell.

Soooo...if Jon is pissed off it must be something big....

What I'm guessing is that , if MoFi is releasing this STEREO SACD, there is no way in Hades we are ever going to get a Quad SACD (or whatever...DVD-A, BD...) from Santana ...EVER?

The question is, if AF has a Santana song on the Quad Sampler....could somebody explain why then the "detènte"...ho owns the Santana catalog?
Can't they be licensed to both MoFi AND AF?

It's not a case of "detente". Sony Music has been licensing many albums to Audio Fidelity for release on Multichannel SACD.
Starting with the first two AF Multichannel SACDs - Super Session and Child Is Father to the Man - both 5.1 tapes from Sony Music.

You'll note the same on the new Multichannel SACD "The Collection". The album's producers are Bruce Dickenson from Sony Music and Mark Wilder, mastering engineer formerly at Sony Music.

As to licensing, once Audio Fidelity, Mobile Fidelity, Analogue Productions (or another reissue label) licenses an album for SACD release, they obtain a multi-year exclusive to release that album on SACD.
Other reissue lables can't get a license to issue that album on SACD until the license agreement expires.

What is possible is to license a specific song by the artist for inclusion on a sampler album (as was done for The Collection).

Bruce Dickenson puts his pants on one leg at a time like the rest of us, except once they're on he makes gold records!

Bring on all known 1970s Santana in Quad or even 5.1 now !

:violin
We've just been discussing how that's pretty much impossible now because of MOFI.
The only way that could change is if Sony decides they want to release the classic Santana Quad mixes themselves on DVD and/or Blu-Ray, cause SACD is out of the question right now…

The only possible scenario for Santana quads is if A.F. or A.P. or even Sony reimburses MO-FI for some of the "rights" they just paid for.A veryslim possibility.

That has about as much of a chance of happening as David Gilmour, Roger Waters, and Nick Mason reuniting for a Pink Floyd reunion tour.
We'll see pigs flying in the air before either one of those things happen!
