I atmos stream, but I'm downmixing to 5.1. Both halves of "Broken" didn't feel too discrete to me. So they may still be upmixes.
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing on an Atmos setup. Especially, the live reprise... that doesn't sound immersive at all. Were those the only two tracks that were upmixed on the original 5.1? I couldn't remember.
For the studio half at least, some elements could've been pulled from the Preacher Mix, because they're either solo or with a lot less instruments:

Alternatively they could have used ai to demixed it, given it wasn't around in 2014.

Out of interest I'd pretty interested to know what must have happened to the multitracks and how they must of gotten misplaced and or destroyed since everything else (apart for certain bits of seeds) seems to be intact.

Probably during the creation of said Preacher Mix. Only "Broken" has been touched for that 12" version, "Head over Heels" seems completely identical to the album version to me. And the second half at the end of the Preacher Mix is a real Frankenstein creation that has been assembled from bits of the first half (apparently the second half was never recorded in the studio).

For the live half of the studio album (er...), the question is interesting because one assumes that the multitracks of the whole Hammersmith show must've gotten lost, else we surely would've gotten a remix of it at this point. The audio of the In My Mind's Eye DVD in the Hurting box set wasn't even normalized.
 
Honestly every time I listen to Shout I feel like I want it to sound bombastic and exciting, especially in the part where the drums come in, but in reality I think that I've created a version of the song in my head that does not and probably cannot exist. I've got to stop believing it's something that it is not 😅
I've got a few tracks like that where I have long searched for the version/mastering/pressing etc that sounds like The Way I Remember It. Only to finally realize The Way I Remember It must be only in my imagination.
 
Give me a physical disc, or nothing at all.
I've got Hurting and Planet discs in Atmos; what I want most is Seeds, Elemental, and Raoul

Seeds of Love was mixed in Atmos a few years ago by Steven Wilson. Awaiting release at some point in time.

I get your point but you might also be remembering one of the contemporary (stereo) remixes. In particular, what us Brits call the "US Remix" does sound a bit 'harder' - the mix is actually more minimal but it means the drums come more to the fore.

(Just don't play the Mothers Talk "Beat Of The Drum Mix" unless you are a very big fan of 80s remixes!)
 
Funny, I thought "Shout" was a trip in Atmos. It starts off like the 5.1 with the bells moving left-to-right behind you, but then the bass synth (or whatever that is) appears discretely in the side speakers when the vocal enters. The Fairlight CMI flute sound is mixed almost entirely to the height channels, which is super cool. Roland's double-tracked vocals start off in the front, then switch to the rear after the big drum fill at 3:20. I also thought the lead vocals in the center speaker seemed more prominent and better-integrated with the rest of the soundstage than in the 2014 mix.

Vocals less confined to center channel are a big win for me. Something that clearly wasn't a priority in Simple Minds' two recent releases, unfortunately.

I'm glad that Steven Wilson has changed from his first Atmos mixes with vocals in the center channel, and follows the style of Bruce Soord and others who, while keeping the vocals in front stage, avoid the excessive isolation produced by vocals only in the center channel, but not expand the vocals to the Stereo Fronts, but more wide to the Wides speakers.

In this mix, dry vocals appear in both the center channel and the Wide channels (in my 9.1.4). Additionally, there is a lower volume copy of the vocals with far echo/reverb on multiple speakers: Fronts, Top Fronts, Side and Rear surrounds.

All of this, taken together, gives rise to vocals that come from the frontal plane (so as not to be excessively disruptive with vocals from behind or above) but that is so diffused and wide that it is perceived as extended throughout the whole front part of the room, without being isolated.

Exactly, and in my humble but fully opinionated view, this is the only legit way of doing a surround mix. *Unless* the mix is an original surround mix and the artist specifically request the abomination (IMHO) of "center only vocals".
