Does The Met Live in HD count? (I mean...it was "live," if not live.) Anyway, I saw today's live broadcast of Anthony Davis's landmark opera X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X at my local theater. As much as I like Davis as a jazz composer, I'm not that wild about this score--you can buy a surround recording of it on the BMOP Sound label--though I can't help respecting its wide-ranging ambition. And it's an important work, for all sorts of reasons. I thought I might like the piece more if I saw a full-blown production, but it didn't really click for me on the level of drama or storytelling or characterization, either. On the level of spectacle, though, it was truly brilliant: production design, staging, costuming, and choreography were all great. And some terrific performances, too, starting with the orchestra and jazz combo under the director of Kazem Abdullah and--a standout--Victor Ryan Robinson in the dual role of Elijah/Street.
