Does The Met Live in HD count? (I mean...it was "live," if not live.) Anyway, I saw today's live broadcast of Anthony Davis's landmark opera X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X at my local theater. As much as I like Davis as a jazz composer, I'm not that wild about this score--you can buy a surround recording of it on the BMOP Sound label--though I can't help respecting its wide-ranging ambition. And it's an important work, for all sorts of reasons. I thought I might like the piece more if I saw a full-blown production, but it didn't really click for me on the level of drama or storytelling or characterization, either. On the level of spectacle, though, it was truly brilliant: production design, staging, costuming, and choreography were all great. And some terrific performances, too, starting with the orchestra and jazz combo under the director of Kazem Abdullah and--a standout--Victor Ryan Robinson in the dual role of Elijah/Street.

This is how close I was to Brad Gillis of Night Ranger last night. That’s not zoomed in either.

I won’t tell the whole story because it would take too long, but Brad is one of those musicians who seems genuinely appreciative of fans coming out to the show. I’m sure lots of musicians are, but there were lots of little interactions from him with the crowd that made the evening extra special.

Nice that you still get printed tickets. I thought everything was bar codes on a mobile phone these days. I have all my tickets stubs from the 1980s in a binder somewhere. I should dig that out. (Dio... Iron Maiden... Jethro Tull... Robert Plant... etc. etc. etc.).

If I given the option I always choose printed tickets (1. to keep it as memorabilia, 2. easier to sell), but it seems that Ticketmaster is turning digital here in Mexico, not sure if physical will disappear completely, though, or if it's just gonna be another option.
Digital has its pros too, like scalpers are ******, and tickets are safe to sell, however I'm sure Ticketmaster will become the scalpers charging both the seller and the buyer for any transaction...fuckers.

Well then. Guess I’m going to the Sphere next year. April 18th-21st. Announced on the sphere itself last night, no word from the band just yet

Edit: it’s official!

As well as the official ticket lottery. Put my name in the hat. If chosen, the 4 nights package is $725… yikes! Guess they need to recoup the billion the sphere cost… https://phish.shop.ticketstoday.com/Splash.aspx

Well never mind! Apparently social media “personal finance gurus” caught wind of the lottery system and told everyone that they could “easily 2x or 4x your investment”… and basically nobody got tickets, myself included. The public on-sale just ended, I was #1501 in line, but they sold out by the time I got through.

And checking the secondhand market…

I’m good!

Looks amazing
Absolutely, but I forgot to add.
The sound, I have been to a thousand concerts since my very first Canned Heat in San Jose 1968.
The sound at The Sphere was beyond great, absolutely perfect full envelope of surround, I wouldn't call it discrete Atmos in the sense of different instruments/vocals coming from different areas, but just pure sound in a beautiful envelope of immersive surround, stunning.
I have tinnitus, mild to moderate, and if the concert sound is ******, my ears go bezerk . My ears where just fine, I didn't wear my earplugs and had no excessive ringing in my ears when I went to bed.
It was a concert, so it was loud, of course. My decibel app, I checked one time and was at 90db.

Dead & Company In Talks For Vegas Sphere Residency: Report

https://www.stereogum.com/2245692/dead-company-in-talks-for-vegas-sphere-residency-report/news/
A couple weeks ago, Phish announced a four-night residency at the high-tech Vegas Sphere to follow U2’s 40-date residency. There were rumors last month that Beyoncé was being eyed to perform at the $2.3 billion venue, and now the New York Post reports that the Sphere is in talks with Dead & Company too.

Dead & Co., who like U2 are managed by Irving Azoff, would be playing a string of shows in the summer of 2024, according to the publication. Sphere spokespeople and a rep for the band declined to comment to the New York Post.

Plans are also in the works for MSG Spheres in other cities. Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates or Hanam in South Korea could be next, as London recently rejected MSG’s proposal for one there.

Stays in Vegas: London mayor rejects plan for Stratford Sphere venue

Giant orb similar to one opened in Nevada refused by Sadiq Khan after potential light pollution deemed unacceptable

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news...ejects-application-for-stratford-sphere-venue
It might be good enough for Las Vegas, but the Sphere – a dazzling orb-shaped 90 metre-high music venue that doubles as a giant digital billboard – is unlikely to be coming to London after the mayor rejected a planning application.

Madison Square Garden Entertainment (MSG) had applied to build the 21,500-capacity structure in Stratford, east London, close to the Olympic Park.

But Sadiq Khan has ruled that the venue – which would have been vividly illuminated at night – “would result in an unacceptable negative impact on local residents”.
