Been reading this board for a while and decided to join to participate in the discussions. Long time immersive audio enthusiast. Not old enough to have enjoyed Quad in its heyday, but I was into all of this when Laser Disc was the video format of choice and Pro Logic entered the hobby in the 90's. Currently enjoying a modest Atmos setup. Looking forward to future discussions.
Welcome to the fun!

Hello everyone! Lovely to see such a big community around the theme of multichannel music.
I'm an enthusiast about it enjoying SACD, DVD-A and some regular dvd's and blu-rays through my pioneer DV-656A. At some point in the future I'm planning to get myself a good turntable, stylus and decoder to begin collecting sq, qs and cd-4 records.
Apart from the multichannel music stuff I love collecting (and using, don't see the point of collecting if you can't enjoy it) LaserDiscs, dvd's, hd-dvd's, blu-ray's and tapes in general, vhs, beta, svc...

Lovely to meet you all!

Hello, I am new to the world of 5.1 surround and became obsessed with it very quickly. I was picking up deluxe reissues of classic CDs and they often came with a DVD that wasn't much use/interest to me, that was over several years. Then I realized how easy it would be for me to turn my Sonos Beam basement setup into a surround experience by adding a could Sonos 1s as wall mounts. (I don't have the sub mini yet, working on it). But it changed my life! Went back and rediscovered how much better all those discs sounded in surround.

Problem though! I wondered how to get past the issue of constantly swapping discs in the player. Having the discs ripped onto a hard drive would be so much better. I realized that space isn't as much of an issue as it used to be and I'd also recently set up a NAS system. Problem solved (mostly).

It seems SONOS doesn't play well with others and I had a devil of a time trying to get it to recognize multichannel files. (Still can't get it to recognize FLAC files but I have it reading WAV files now if it reads from a USB plugged directly into my TV). My brother experienced a lot of the same issues but got past his by plugging external storage directly into his nVidia shield (I use an Amazon fire stick so can't do that).

That's a little too technical for an introduction, but long story short, I am here to enthuse about/located more of these great 5.1 mixes. I'm sure most of you have experienced the same problem I have, which is that they are often released but for a very limited window of time before they disappear completely. And as badly as I want some of the ones that passed me by, I'm not feeling OK about lining the pockets of online scalpers. Nice to be among experts.

Looking forward to speaking to you all.

Hi Everyone,
I am in surround "business" for some time. Started some years ago with a "cheap" samsung 7.1 surround receiver and liked it more and more to hear movies in surround sound.
But 2 years ago I renovated my living/hearing room and upgraded to a Denon AVR 37xx with 5.1.2 DALI Atmos configuration and I am very happy with it.
My interest changed from surround movies to surround music. And now I am listening via AppleMusic with AppleTV and SACD/DVD to surround music and enjoying it :)
I am here to get new inspirations for new and old music. Interest swings slowly from pop/rock to classic/jazz/blues.
If possible I rip everything in HiRes/Multichannel and play it through my local plex server to AppleTV or AndroidTV connected to Denon/Dali.
I have moved all my CD/DVD/BD to the attic and have a "media free" living room.

Hi,Gerd, and welcome! One thing I’m sure you will find here is a way to spend money on media. Many of us have decades of practice in that fine art, and we are very good at it and are willing to share how we do it.

Hello I'm new here, and I'm learning about possible configurations for listening to music or movies :)
There are probably as many possible configurations as there are people configuring. I'm fairly happy with the configuration I've been building (click on my signature "barfle's bonus room bijou" below), but there are many ways that are simpler, and many, many ways that are more sophisticated. Enjoy the journey!

Hello, I recently joined. I've seen QQ threads pop up in various Google search results, so I thought I'd get more involved, as this site seems to be filled with "my people." A little about me: I've been a multi-channel enthusiast for the better part of 20 years. I work in the pro-audio industry as a product developer, and live in the Chicago area. I recently upgraded to an Atmos (and MPEG-H!) capable receiver, and am excited to explore the latest offerings in those formats. Some of the threads here have been a treasure trove of recommendations! Looking forward to meeting the community here!

Currently I'm running a 5.2 (dual subs) system. Here a summary of my equipment:
  • Denon AVR-X3800H
  • B&W 805 (left and right)
  • ELAC Uni-Fi UC5 (center)
  • B&W DM601 (surround)
  • Hsu Research ULS 15 Mk2 (x2)
  • Vizio 65" display
  • Blu Ray player and Fire Stick as sources

Hi
Seoman here. Been busy with multichannel from the 90’s. Music is the main priority.

Set: marantz av7704 with a 7.1.4 setup. Running a 7.1.2 (left height rear output is broken).
F, c, r musical fidelity xa200 driving a svs ultra bookshelf. Sides are svs ultra bookshelves driven by musical fidelity xa 50.
Rears svs prime bookshelves and rear height are svs prime allr rears drive by a marantz mm7705.
Front heights are svs prime satellite driven by xa 50.
Source oppo203 for sacd5.1 and atmos. Rest comes from a solid state htpc running foobar.
Foobar2000 can play the sacds but not as good sounding as the oppo. Converting to pcm on the fly is not as good as native 5.1 sacd over hdmi.

Love symphonic rock. Pink Floyd and such but also very fond of electronic music like orbital or front 242.
Sadly there is hardly any multichannel electronic music. Depeche mode and YELLOW rase the bar (and veryhigh)

Top mch album:
Dsotm
Animals
Night clubbing grace jones
Hand cannot erase, steve wilson
Misplaced childhood, marillion.
Headhunter, herby hancock
Point, yellow
1,2,3,4,5,6,7, 3d kraftwerk
Porcupine tree, fear of a blank planet. (To be honest any thing steve wilson turns to multichannel is worth listening to)

Welcome to QQ! Looking at most of your music choices, a kindred spirit indeed.

Like you, I thought it would be a good idea to rip surround discs to digital copy. To this day, I am overwhelmed by what needs to be done and the cost of certain programs is out of my reach. Still, I learned that you can purchase surround FLAC from HDtracks. I play them with Foobar2000 from my computer to AVR via HDMI cable. I also use Audacity to audit how many channels are recorded--and have also used this to convert files to a different format. Again, welcome to the journey. :51QQ

Greetings! My quad journey in Canada began when I found myself with 4 Cerwin Vegas D-3 speakers. I power them with a Yamaha Atmos receiver. I check out any surround stuff, but am especially interested in the 70s quads. I've got The Guess Who SACDs and they're great releases! I've also got a couple of the Aerosmith quads on DVD-A, but cant seem to track down Toys In The Attic. That's about it! Looks like a cool forum. Cheers!
