Elton John - Elton John - SACD Hybrid 5.1/Stereo

Perhaps I'm alone in loving the Police hits disc. I remember getting it the day it came out as a DTS CD, back when you had to order this stuff from Ken Cranes' laserdisc shop online - perhaps there is some nostalgia involved there! The SACD sounds much better than the DTS CD, although I suspect that like the Marvin Gaye hits disc, it was probably mastered at 20 or 24 bit 44.1khz because it was originally intended for DTS encoding.

Keep in mind that the 90's was the virtual stone age for digital mixing compared to now; all the wonderful plugins that emulate everything from vintage reverbs to compressors and all the other wonderful studio gear that gave these recordings their original sound hadn't been made yet. I suppose you could say those 5.1 mixes that were made for DTS in the 90's are of their time, and in that they have a charm in their limitations just like the quad mixes of the 70's do.

I love Tumbleweed Connection - of all the EJ SACD's it's the one I go to most often, which is saying something given how good all the mixes are.

Ken Cranes. That takes me back a few years. I remember visiting their main store in Westminster, Southern California. They had all the Laserdisc titles.

Tower Video on Sunset had some interesting import laserdiscs.

In the 70's about 77 or so, we went down to NYC for the day. Got lost trying to find the GW bridge, and stopped to get directions at a toll booth. After getting them, this stretch limo pulls up to the booth, I just happen to look, and in an open window is Sir Elton himself! He looks up at me smiles and says hello. I say hi, not fully realizing who it was. I turned to go back to my car and it hit me. So, again I turn around and look and he is still looking at me with the Elton John grin. I didn't know what to say! He was ready to talk to me, so I say "Hey! Your Elton"-he says with the grin, 'I am" And this-he says turning to his passenger is Bernie" At that point they drive off. I must have stood there an eternity, In disbelief. When I got back to the car and told my friends no one believed me. It did not matter, because I know he spoke to me!

What a great encounter and story! Thanks for sharing!

Got Miles Davis' Tutu on DVD-Audio coming my way. Wasn't very much on Ebay, ~$17 with shipping thrown in.

That Blonde On Blonde still goes for about $8. I bought one for that but still haven't played it. Didn't buy the Ronstadt SACD, but I sure with they'd put out another batch of titles, including the two Alice Cooper ones.

$8? really!? I MUST get one! Now! If not sooner! :p
(but only if its in the natty slipcase)

Partially the reason I got that. Otherwise, I could've purchased the later Sony re-release on hybrid SACD at my local Fry's for under $15.00.

As for the Linda Ronstadt, I have a sealed DVD-A for that title as well.

I thought the Linda Ronstadt album was disappointing sound wise. But the other WEA SACDs are quite good. And yes, I've picked up some SACDs and DVD-As at Fry's.
A handy resource overlooked by many.

Did you get Sainsbury's vouchers for Christmas too, as well as Amazon?! I've noticed that Sainsbury's seems to be running down its stocks of cds and sacds. Hopefully they are not stopping altogether as their prices were often the best around.

I have Lizard already. Is the Moody Blues sacd worth getting (I already have the LP and cd of this)?
