Frank Zappa Wind Ensemble; SACD
3.1 mix listed as 5.1. Not great, no punch, no bottom end. For collector's only really.

Being an FZ completist and a huge Opus 3 fan, I popped for this. Your review is right on the money.

Different strokes, of course. I love this disc. No, it does not employ a pop-like discrete surround approach but rather a 'classical' one, placing you in the middle of the performance space. From the technical info:

The Blumien single-point source stereo recording technique employed since Opus 3's inception means that the acoustic information for the rear channels, i.e. the "surround sound", is available - The centre and sub-woofer have not been utilized on this disc.

I think the sound is wonderful with plenty of 'bottom end and punch'. Perhaps the the absence of a sub-woofer track would dilute the impact on some setups? The arrangements and performances are top-notch. Delightfully clever and often quirky interpretations of Zappa's music.

:yikes

Sorry but i like 5.1 mixes to have music mixed into rears otherwise one might as well choose the 2.0 option.

Latest Amazon arrivals in 5.1:

Jakszyk, Fripp and Collins - A King Crimson Projekct (DVDA)
Stickmen - Deep (DVDA)

Ian Anderson - Homo Erraticus (DVD-AV)
Katatonia - Dethroned & Uncrowned (DVD-AV)
Yes - The Yes Album (BDA)

How do you like these titles? The KC project has got terrible reviews on Amazon.

great find! (y) you could probably now flog it on for 3 times what you paid for it! :D
Not a bad idea. That's pretty much the plan. The 6 music videos on here aren't anything special. Designed for old style TV aspect ratio and dolby digital for sound, so no big loss. The PPCM tracks do sound good though. I may compare it to the SACD.

Bob Dylan-Blood On The Tracks, Blonde On Blonde, and Bringing It All Back Home. Ordering Another Side soon. Not sure if I want any others, been reading reviews at sacd.net and might get Slow Train Coming. Not a huge Dylan fan, but don't mind getting his stuff since it is fairly inexpensive.
