But the question arises, will little Freddie Blue be satisfied when remix maven extraordinaire, shoeless Stevie Wilson unleashes his spankin' new 5.1 remix of which the absolute masters were recently unearthed in the REAL COURT OF THE CRIMSON KING?

I've heard a Q8 conversion of the Quad, but I think this one is 5.1? Do you prefer the Audio Fidelity SACD 4.0?

It's all the same quad mix, but the Sony Japan and AF are different masterings. Another member kindly sent me a rip of the Sony Japan version a while back, so I was able to compare them. For some reason, Sony Japan adds derived center and sub channels to their quad releases. The center channel is simply a low-level mono summing of all four channels. I would just mute in on playback, or if you're ripping to FLAC just delete it.

I didn't think one sounded better than the other, though I do love the replication of the SQ album cover on the Sony Japan version.

I only own the AF SACD and the SQ LP. It's not my favorite Jeff Beck album, but it's an amazing mix. I love the delineation between Beck's guitar in right rear and Max Middleton's piano in left rear on the opening track. It sounds amazing even off the decoded SQ.

Another thing I really love about the mix on this one is that about halfway through the album, the instrument placements swap so that the drums are in the rear and guitars are in the front. Keeps you guessing.

For my money, Wired is the best of all his quads.

I wholeheartedly agree, Jonathan, that when they start 'mucking around' with the original QUAD masters deriving a .1 LFE and Center ...... it loses its impact. I'm sticking with the AF QUAD original ...even though the SONY 7" packaging is a nice draw!

Hmmm, makes me wonder if the Japanese 5.1 will have more noticeable bass since they added more in that area. And depending on what I hear from my system, I might actually prefer the AF 4.0, as that extra center better be mixed extremely well or it might get mushy in the middle! But I'll definitely put that all aside for the first listen, and just enjoy the ride.
Yippee Ki Yay:rocks

Yup I've had Wired for awhile and agree on that for sure, and I'm one that doesn't mind having the drums in the rear.

Just placed an order with Dutton-Vocalion to catch up on a few stragglers I'd been meaning to get:

Billy Paul - 360 Degrees of Billy Paul & War of the Gods
Chase - Pure Music & Chase
Art Garfunkel - Breakaway
Just received. Debated which one to start with and decided on Chase given I'd just been listening to the Chicago CTA bluray.

Chase is cooking! Never heard their music before and am impressed to say the least. The quad mix is fantastic so far (Twinkles just started). Can't wait to absorb it all and read through Steely Dave's fantastic liner notes!!!
