Porcupine Tree - Deadwing
Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Emerson, Lake & Palmer
Blue Oyster Cult - Agents Of Fortune

Three excellent titles, and surprisingly they didn't cost an arm and a leg! All three were from the same online vendor and came to just over $100.

I really like Deadwing and ELP, Jonathan. I think you'll enjoy them. Let me know what you think of the BOC as I haven't heard that one in surround.

Yeah, they're excellent. Scheiner and Wilson at the top of their game.

I need to spend more time with the BoC, but it's sounding like a typical early-2000s Sony 5.1 mix: not terribly discrete, rears seem a bit too low, and somewhat questionable use of the center channel (the lead guitar riffs in "The Reaper"come blaring from that speaker). It's got nothing on the quad mixes of Tyranny & Mutation and Secret Treaties.

That's great! I don't own Deadwing...which is sort of shocking, considering how much I LOVE PT.

Tyranny & Mutation in quad has got to be excellent. The first two BOC albums really hit home with my brothers and I growing up. Saw them live 4 times in 1973!!!!

The Deadwing DVD-A is an incredible surround experience.

Unlike In Absentia, the stereo and surround mixes of Deadwing were done around the same time. In fact, it's possible the album was entirely conceived with a surround sound mix in mind.

I love the overlapping voices at the end of "Mellotron Scratch" :)

You're right, Jonathan. With the surround lesson and experience Steven got first hand from Elliott on In Absentia, he's probably approached all of his subsequent recording efforts with surround in mind. And what a great journey that has been!

Nice buys! I have two of those. Should look into that ELP disc, one day. I enjoyed their Brain Salad Surgery DVD-A. I also snaffled three surround discs from one store, this week:

Talking Heads' Fear Of Music DVD-A/CD
The Flaming Lips' The Soft Bulletin DVD-A/CD
Ronan Keating's Destination hybrid SACD

All-up, AU$65 (~US$45). Not too shabby! The Talking Heads disc's a no-brainer for me: it's one of the three LPs I was missing in 5.1. The other titles are a bit of a punt. I'd like to get TFL's At War With The Mystics DVD-A one day, for their Queen cover; beyond that, none of their material I've ever heard has appealed to me, musically. I'll see how this DVD-A experience is. I expect Keating's LP to be easy to listen to, plus a friend of mine loves his work, so at least someone's sure to be impressed. 😉
