What's the latest Multichannel SACD or DVD-A added to your pile? - Volume 2

Mine too, the Mahler and Brahms Symphonies and the Stravinsky - Petrushka & Pulcinella Suite. Both great value aren't they.

Currently listening to the Stravinsky sacd. Excellent surround mix so far.

It's the "Symphonies of Wind Instruments" In other words, it's not a symphony (even though it totally is), but rather it's a series of "symphonies." Kinda pretentious, but the music is interesting regardless.

Well work got in the way but working from home does allow me to listen. So I managed to listen to the 1st movements "Langsam" of the Mahler and "In poco allegretto e grazioso" of the Brahms, and they are immersive/discrete in that I felt like I was sitting where the conductor would be, with the instruments around me in a horseshoe. Really nice. I must get the Stravinsky!

what's the surround mix like on this set Duncan?

As people have mentioned this one is really an excellent surround disc.
An good disc to start with if you are curious about this artist



Shostakovich & Ustvolskaya - Piano concertos (Hybr MCh SACD):
An disc i bought without knowing anything about the Music.
From my first quick listening the surround is good for an classic album.
The music sounds interesting as well.
As the price is so good it´s nice to be able to take chances when buying from this site

I've just listened to all of Mahler's 1st and very nice, nice surround, then I looked at the circles on the front cover and had one of those DOH moments, the circles show the Quad layout of the instruments! :ugham:

I'm jealous! Been trying to find the MCh version of that one for ages. (Hope you didn't have to take out a second mortgage...) Nice arrangements & top-notch L.A. session musicians. Especially like the cover of "Babylon Sisters."

Interesting--nice score! I wouldn't have guessed it was still available from a retailer. The description calls it a "reissue." I wonder if it's just been reissued for some reason?

Not knowing any better, I mistakenly bought the single-layer stereo version of Birdland on eBay a year or two ago...

just checked and that's the seller I got mine from so buy with confidence! :upthumb

ps. its a live recording and the mix is ambient surround only, sound quality however is great.
for those that are bothered about these things its a 5.0 mix, no LFE.

i won't be falling over myself to seek out Birdland as even though musically its great, the arrangements are nice and sounds excellent, i find the kind of venue ambience mix approach taken a waste of discrete MultiCh., prefer a more active mix.

That's too bad...but good to know. (And should have guessed, as I've heard both recordings on RBCD.) I think I'll downgrade the status of my own quest to "less than urgent."

I ordered about 10 SACDs from Dutton Vocalion, but felt I needed to put some sort of limit on myself so I didn't get these. Imagine my surprise when I was able to get both at a local used shop. I saw a review that praised the Steinberg Violin Concerto while panning the symphony, and haven't heard anything about Cecil Armstrong Gibbs, but I'm curious enough to try.
