RE: SANTANA , JOPLIN, AND SIMON AND GARFUNKLE
That's 3 very cool Discrete finds FreddieRico . Hope they sound ok after all these years. :D

(y)

Equally impressive finds for , LIGHTFOOT, MITCHELL and Hayward Lodge tapes. (y)

:D

thanks FW! :upthumb

fingers crossed they play ok enough for me to archive them at least :D

to me, they're all impressive finds to a whippersnapper like what i is back here in the frozen wastelands of Blighty, the tapes are 40+ years old and from the other side of the world..! :yikes
they've lived a live that's full, they travelled each and every highway.. they faced it all and they stood 5 inches tall.. and did it sideways.. :ugham:

Never had those BUDDY MILES TAPES , NOR the SQ discs .

At the time.....well there were other discs in my sight I suppose.(regrets me thinks).

Also never saw any A&M gold carts , only white (Canadian) and blue (U.S.) but I think A&M/ODE carts were gold .

All in All that's one VERY BIG haul of Q8'S . :smokin

tbph I was never enamoured of the SQ LP's of either of the Buddy Miles Quads.. the mixes didn't seem to be anything to write home about, sound quality wasn't there (both copies in really good nick, Chapter VII I took out the shrinkwrap myself) and they seemed to maybe not be decoding to their full potential possibly.. put it this way, they're not amongst my favourite CBS Quads.. but i've subsequently heard the Q8 from a very nice conversion (Romanotrax I think?) so maybe my opinion will change down the line about them both and I'll come to enjoy them more.. who knows! its all part of the fun of this lark! :p

ohh.. I don't know anything about gold carts or blue carts or barry white carts.. I'm colourblind when it comes to my Quad, I take it in all shapes, sizes, colours and creeds! :wave

this is one big haul from a fabulous QQ member, whom we all know and love, who I am extremely fond of

Fairly certain that is a legit test pressing that was done for UA. Back in 1975 I met the engineer who posted that. It was made at the JVC CD-4 Cutting Center in LA. Did not learn of this example until a few months ago. He’s a member here but rarely checks in. My last message to him a few months ago has not been answered but that’s par for the course.

A couple more where he posted on discogs:
https://www.discogs.com/Jethro-Tull-Minstrel-In-The-Gallery/release/8163019
and
https://www.discogs.com/Styx-The-Grand-Illusion/release/7913289

Yes, he told me he regretted selling a few of these test pressings and the Discogs listings raised way too many questions so he stopped.

He does like to talk about the old days occasionally but is largely retired in the mountains of the eastern United States.

Merry Christmas to me!

Bought this lot of tapes 90% for the rare as hen's teeth O'Jays 'Message in the Music', but I needed the Croce and Feliciano tapes for my collection as well. The rest will go on the sell/trade pile!

At some point I think we will see the better conversion specialists utilizing The Plangent Process in the system of bringing these tapes to sound as good as they can.

The Plangent Process removes wow and flutter from one of more generations of tape dupes. And you end up with a 24/192 master to work with. It's the future of tape restoration.

Not sure if this has been covered previously.

After bidding on an eBay auction (thanks, fredblue!) on a lark, I find myself the proud owner of Leonard Bernstein's ballet Dybbuk--without having any equipment to play it on! If any of you stateside Q8 enthusiastics--particularly the small subset of you with a modified Fostex, perhaps?--are also Bernstein fans, please PM me!

[Edit, a couple of weeks later: a polite query to a Discogs seller yielded a sealed copy (dig the old Woolco price sticker!) of Trouble in Tahiti at a very reasonable price. And my plea, above, was answered. Can't wait to hear these!]

And here they are!

Ted Heath's Big Ones
The Floyd - Glad You're Not Here
Waylon
The Jim Croce Experience
The Marina Strings play the Neil Diamond Songbook. <---- This has got to be a rare tape. Far as I can tell, it's the ONLY Quad released by 20th Century Records, though it looks like they considered releasing The Love Unlimited Orchestra at one point. I'd almost have preferred that. This one is OK, it's reminiscent of the early Capitol Samplers. Maybe I was expecting more, but the mix is VERY sterile. (Oh, and the tape features a swapped channel - strings and bass are in both lefts).

I would assume this is recorded on 16-track equipment, but the string section is relegated to (what should be) the two front channels. Bass front center. Drum Kit and electric guitar are in Back Right, Acoustic guitar and a piano acompan....accompani.... also plays in Back Left. The entire mix is devoid of ANY echo of any kind. It's VERY dry.
