When Sony introduced SACD, I was a hardware dealer. They touted it as being compatible with CD players (dual layer.) Yet, there weren't any Sony dual layer SACD's for the first 5 years of Columbia/Epic SACD production. No doubt, they wanted to drive the sales of SACD hardware.

Despite what Universal says, I believe it highly unlikely that they will produce a single disc box set. Higher pricing is easier to justify with several discs rather than one. It's all about marketing, just as $9.99 is seemingly $1 or even $10 less than $10.00. Smoke & mirrors.

Dear Ms. quadness,

I had not given much thought to the 7 hour capacity of the blu rays. but it dawned on me this morning as i was picking out a cd to listen to in my car on the drive to work. it was elton john - madman. but it was from the 5 disc collection, in the blue clamshell box, very similiar to the original album series or the classic album series. i dont know if royality rates would be prohibitive, but think of the blu rays being a 5, 7 or even 10 cd set. like all the rolling stones, or the beatles stereo or monon box. as i said i dont know if the royalities would make it a no go, or the list price would be out of the hands of most buyers.

So.. with two weeks to go, here's the complete list from Fnac of BDA titles coming on 13th of May:

1.) Monkey me - Mylène Farmer.

2.) Rock'n roll attitude - Johnny Hallyday.

3.) Breakfast in America - Supertramp.

4.) Sang pour sang - Johnny Hallyday.

5.) Aux armes et caetera - Serge Gainsbourg.

6.) Grand écran - Eddy Mitchell.

7.) Zizanie - Zazie.

8.) Sempre libera - Anna Netrebko, Claudio Abbado.

9.) Symphonie n.9 - Moldau - Préludes - Antonin Dvorak, Bedrich Smetana, Franz Liszt, Ferenc Fricsay.
Symphonie n.5 - Gustav Mahler, Herbert von Karajan.

10.) Messe pour le temps présent - Pierre Henry.

11.) Ascenseur pour l'échafaud - Miles Davis.

12.) Ne me quitte pas - Jacques Brel.

13.) Les Marquises - Jacques Brel.

14.) I put a spell on you - Nina Simone.

15.) The Velvet Underground & Nico.

16.) Layla - Derek and the Dominos.

17.) Big band bossa nova - Quincy Jones.

18.) Tostaky - Noir Désir.

19.) Fantaisie militaire - Alain Bashung.

20.) Osez Joséphine - Alain Bashung.

21.) The look of love - Diana Krall.

22.) Legend - Bob Marley.

23.) Night train - Oscar Peterson.

24.) Getz Gilberto - Stan Getz, Joao Gilberto.

So of these 25 how many do we know to have existing 5.1 mixes ?
I just want to get my facts straight before I let fly on the UMG Pure Audio Facebook page.

none of that lot.

they're just one UMG BDA with 5.1 "Serge Gainsbourg - Histoire de Melody Nelson".

This was released as Deluxe Edition set in France, with a DVD-Video containing a 5.1 mix (in Dolby Digital), so this is something of a coup.

Of the remaining 11 not on my initial preliminary list, none of those have 5.1 either.

36 in all.

Only 1 in 5.1 Surround.

Of those 36 new BDA's, the following definitely saw 5.1 SACD release, approx 10 years ago:

Johnny Hallyday - Rock n Roll Attitude,
Johnny Hallyday - Sang Pour Sang,
Jacques Brel - Les Marquises,
Derek & The Dominos - Layla (*),
Barbara - L'aigle Noir.

(*) 2 different surround mixes of Layla, 1 on SA-CD, 1 on DTS DVD-V in boxset, neither of which are on the new blu-ray audio.

nice idea, I can't see it happening quite like that. of the 36 released so far only the Ella & Louis blu-ray is the equivalent to 2 CDs on one disc.

maybe Universal will put out some more compilation sets, like the Rolling Stones "Grr..!!" blu-ray, which has the equivalent of 3 redbook CDs worth of music but in Hi-Rez stereo all on one blu-ray disc.

I agree.....the fact that they've released one.....does give us some hope, though !

I have a sneaking suspicion when/if Warner get on board, they will recycle their DVD-A 5.1 mixes on blu-ray, they will sell well and that will get Universal to release 5.1 when they see there is a demand for it that translates into $ALE$.

Diana Krall "The Look of Love" was also released on DVD-A around ten years ago.

I certainly don't think the Serge Gainsbourg disc, is the first and last release in 5.1 from UMG !

+5.1 :p

if UMG continue on this stereo-athon, I'm hoping the next batch will include other Japan-only Universal SHM-SACDs such as:

Steely Dan's "Aja",
The Queen back catalogue,
The Dire Straits back catalogue,
The remaining Stevie Wonder albums:-
"Innervisions", "Hotter Than July", "Talking Book", "Fulfillingness' First Finale",
Olivia Newton-John's "Come On Over",
Black Sabbath's "Master Of Reality",
Rainbow "Rainbow Rising", "Long Live Rock 'n' Roll",
Thin Lizzy "Black Rose",
Lynyrd Skynyrd "Second Helping",
Jimmy Smith "The Cat",
Whitesnake "Come An' Get It",
The Style Council "Cafe Bleu",
Fairport Convention "Liege & Lief",
Traffic "John Barleycorn Must Die",
Rod Stewart "Gasoline Alley",
Wishbone Ash "Argus",
"Asia",
Cream's "Wheels On Fire",
"Blind Faith",
10cc "The Original Soundtrack",
The Who's "Who's Next",
Marvin Gaye "What's Going On"...

While i'm waiting for news of 5.1 releases....i'll pacify myself with the 2.0 versions of Diana Krall, Bob Marley & Eric Clapton. ( Probably dispatched by the end of the day....so hopefully will receive sometime on Thursday ? )

Another possible boost for potential blu-ray audio mass adoption..

http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2013/05/xbox-one/

Microsoft revealed their new console, the XBox One, today.

It purports to be a complete home entertainment solution, more than just a mere games console, with integration with existing TV/cable services, movie and music on-demand services.. an H.E hub, including a blu-ray compatible optical drive has got to be a shot in the arm for blu-ray video and the follow on is potential growth of blu-ray audio.

Add to that, Sony's upcoming PlayStation 4 also features blu-ray (it was rumoured Sony may be ditching blu-ray capability rather than carrying it over from its aging PS3) and you have a situation where the two main next-generation gaming/home entertainment machines, which will be in many people's home entertainment rigs when they appear later in the year, will both have blu-ray playback capabilities, resulting in even greater adoption & usage of blu-ray in all it's forms.

Slightly tenuous but.. it can't be a bad thing, can it!?

I can see it now..

"High Fidelity Pure Audio blu-ray disc - Playable in all blu-ray players and on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4,
Microsoft XBox One and all PCs with blu-ray compatible drives. High Fidelity Pure Audio disc includes mp3 and FLAC High Fidelity download access for use on your PC, Music Server, Smartphone & tablet device.. wherever you are High Fidelity Pure Audio goes with you."

!BAZINGA! :p

I was hoping the XBox One would playback SACD. That would be so funny. What would Sony have done then?

Haha..!! :D

$ony would have loved that! Screw the hell out of Micro$oft for using their own technology which they abandoned years ago just when it was gathering momentum!

Ker-ching!

Amazon.CA now has temporarily out of stock on the Supertramp, Stevie Wonder and Cat Stevens blu rays. but when I look at my open orders still says not yet shipped, but they haven't taken my money yet either.

They won't take your money until items are ready for dispatch.

Given that FNAC, have exclusive selling rights for the next 5 months, i'm not surprised they say temporarily out of stock. ( It said the same thing on Amazon.fr on release date, 13/14th )

I doubt very much, that anyone will be able to buy these discs, from anywhere other than FNAC ! ??

There's the Fnac total exclusivity theory confirmed! Amazon can't get these discs from the distributor either!

That and the Cat Stevens doesn't exist (yet!)..!! :D
