Reminds me of the first four Beatles UK LPs being releases on mono CD as they were recorded and initially releases in stereo but were meant to be heard in a mono mix down from two & four track masters. Initially Rush had a problem with their songs in surround but changed their minds later on. I'm hoping Supertramp's members have a similar change of heart. Otherwise do as they did for Pet Sounds & Odessa and have it available in stereo & surround.

I doubt Supertramp know much, if anything, about their music being available on the new HFPA BD-A, let alone the whole surround thing! :p

legend has it that Robert Margouleff offered to remix Stevie's back catalogue into surround and was met with a total lack of interest from whomever it concerned (I suspect that was Stevie rather than Universal/Motown, as there were a couple of Marvin Gaye 5.1 releases from Motown/Universal....

Legend has it? That sounds unnecessarily vague and unreliable, when the story comes from Bob Margouleff himself, talking to me this April in LA. As for Stevie being the block, that's pure speculation, but quite likely. Getting a prompt response from Wonder's camp about anything is famously difficult, even for his own record label. Motown wanted to put a couple of tracks of his on a compilation a while back and, after three years of no reply, an exasperated Universal employee went round to his house, and he signed the papers in 5 minutes, as if it had never been an issue.

BTW, one of the Marvin Gaye 5.1 albums is a Columbia Legacy SACD of 'Midnight Lady', and very wonderful it is.

"Titles in 5.1 surround will only be available if the original studio recording was produced in that surround format 'as the artist intended."

Doesn't the Serge 5.1 disc fail that test? Was it quad originally? If not, it can't be as he intended. If it was, I bet it was remixed around 1974 like all the other LPs from the quad boom, not because he intended it, but because it was the latest format to attract more sales. I haven't got a problem with record companies only doing things which make money, but it's disingenuous to disguise it as artistic merit.

its just a manner of expression, don't get hung up on it, maaaan!! you've entered into the stuff of legend already! (at least in my world/head!) :D

I was referring to the 2 Universal 5.1 mixes of Marvin Gaye (Let's Get It On & The Marvin Gaye Collection) but there's the Midnight Love 5.1 too (shame it's such an inconsistent album, the surround mix is good...).

its a modern 5.1 remix (with lead vocals hard in the centre and strings in the rears -- it's gorgeous!!!).. it's all just B-S about the artists' intent with the 5.1.. I'm simply past caring about the lack of 5.1 on these things, every one of these HFPA BDA's I've bought so far has been either great or superb even if "only stereo". I reckon there will be more 5.1, just not as much as us lot would like!

A legend? Sweet.

Not all of the 'Midnight Love' album is good, but enough for my liking and, though one critic at the time referred to its electronica as synthetic cocaine sex music (not meant as a compliment), I love the rich sound of it, particularly the 5.1 SACD.

On a sad note, I just went to Amazon UK to order the Stevie Wonder BD-A, only to find that they now have it just as a £98 import. I hope that changes quicksmart.

yeah! of course! Props & snaps & kudos and all that stuff to you for approaching Margouleff about the SW back-cat in surround!

I make a point everytime I come across someone in the music biz. (doesn't happen often enough!) who might have some info on surround music etc., to quiz them in the hope of some feedback for our cause!

so Amazon UK have sold out of the Stevie blu-ray audio again.. so much for these new blu-ray audio's being a flop!@: ;)

that sucks 98 pounds. i ordered mine it was $25 total US dollars and it should be here by weds. i think if you see it as available through amazon grab it then or it might disappear.

Check out the dynamic range of the Bob Marley Legend blu-ray. The compressed the heck out of it... I wonder if the original material feels respected.

oh dear.. thanks for the info but that is sad to see :( still sounds pretty good and def not "brickwalled".. Its louder than the Stevie & Supertramp, now I guess I know why! volume levels are v.inconsistant from track to track though, which is weird. I don't know how the DR is so screwed compared to the HD Tracks, I suppose that means they're different (re)masterings.. I doubt if they're even the same source!? Anythings possible with these in the absence of any info!? disappointing.. still the Bob Marley & the Stones discs are the two I could live without, the others sound fab I'd be gutted if it turned out they were so compressed too!

my stevie wonder blu ray sitkol arrived today. 4 days from the Uk to Ohio USA. it sounds great.

So is there a detailed list of which of these are 5.1 and which aren't? I've waded through some of this but even the most recent posts seem like speculation.

I hope they release the BD-A separately in the near future. I neither need nor can afford five discs of Van Morrison. A five-disc set of Scheiner's missing Steely Dan 5.1 mixes on the other hand.....
